....
It is too late.
The End, over and out,
we're not going to make it anymore.
Five to twelve was years ago,
time passes slowly -- but surely.
It is too late.
When politicians east and west declare
that it is not too late,
then everything's too late.
When they really begin making themselves
mutually defenseless, when they voluntarily
destroy their beloved fireworks,
they must be afraid of something worse than war.
It is too late.
One has to remember
what trees and seals normally can put up with.
Woe betide those who still won't give up hope,
who are still rubbing their hands
in the sweat of their own innocence.
Woe betide those who still start with themselves,
who still give good example in front of empty rows.
They will not be thanked.
It is too late.
Every second, somewhere some idiot says
that he suddenly thinks something or other --
every second one of these non-persons,
these be-nothings, worsens our penalty.
We were, have, and are lost.
So what's left to do?
That's a matter of taste.
Intercourse, dialogue or gin,
inhibition or Hemingway,
I Ging or aw yuck,
just down to our whim
and depending on our hyper- or subthyroidism.
It is too late.
We've made quite sure that Hell exists.
Regarding Heaven, though, we're left with the hopeless belief
that we've deserved our fate
and can only still bargain for one thing.
Let me tell you, it is too late.
And tell everyone where you heard that first.
- Heinz Rudolf Kunze
