About Me

Lyrical Whips were born on a cold, winters day in February 1984 in Brent and Sids studio apartment on the upper east side of NYC where newspapers had to be stuffed into the cracks of the windows so the snow wouldnt blow inside. Brent Stavig (songwriter, lead singer, rhythm guitar), Sid Olson (lead guitar, vocals), Thom Walsh (bass, vocals), and Dave Rodway (drums) had been honing their craft in numerous bands before joining together as Lyrical Whips. Their sound was part REM, part Robyn Hitchcock and part Beatles, but with the release of "Let it Be" by The Replacements, everything changed. Lyrical Whips now decided to stop paying so much attention to complicated song arrangements and endless lyrical content, and start having fun with their music while drinking copious amounts of beer, though only Thom threw up before performing. When not busy bringing home transvestite prostitutes, throwing empty beer bottles at limos full of New Jersey knuckleheads on prom night, recording each other puking, or dressing up in wigs and high heels to go to Upper East Side rich-kid's bars, Lyrical Whips were developing into one of the best power-pop bands in NYC. Soon they moved to the Lower East Side and began playing any club that would have them. While CBGB hosted the band dozens of times, there were also gigs at the Pyramid Club, the China Club, Limelight, the Milk Bar, Area, The Dive, Kennys Castaways (featuring unannounced guest Jaco Pastorious), and many other clubs. They played several shows with Sally Randall's "Noise" conglomerate all over town. Lyrical Whips quickly developed a following and found themselves sharing the stage with The Smithereens, Vernon Reid's Living Colour, Jane County, Pierce Turner, Hi Fi Tie, The Hillbilly Peckers, and many other seminal NYC bands. Sadly, Lyrical Whips disbanded in 1989 after five years of hooliganism, debauchary and the stuff rock'n roll dreams are made of. There were several occasions when the major labels beckoned, and a few rejection letters from struggling indies, but Lyrical Whips never released a proper album. The songs you hear are taken from a vast archive of demo tapes, rehearsals and live gigs. We change them regularly, so check back often. Brent now resides in Seattle, Sid's in Portland, Thom is in Dallas and Dave is in San Diego. They are loosely planning a reunion gig in Washington State this summer. Any interest? Feel free to contact any of them through this official site. MyGen Profile Generator
