My life and work: I was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, and spent my early years in India, where my father worked as a surgeon. Later I went to school and university in the northern English city of Durham and graduated from Durham University in 1973 with First Class Honors in Sociology. I pursued a career in quality journalism, writing for many of Britain's leading newspapers including The Times, The Sunday Times, The Independent, and The Guardian. I was co-editor of New Internationalist magazine from 1976-1979 and East Africa correspondent of The Economist from 1981-1983.
My first book (Journey Through Pakistan, with photographers Mohamed Amin and Duncan Willetts) was published in 1981. It was followed by Under Ethiopian Skies (1983), Ethiopia: The Challenge of Hunger (1984), and AIDS: The Deadly Epidemic (1986). In 1987 I began work on a critique of foreign aid, Lords of Poverty: The Freewheeling Lifestyles, Power, Prestige and Corruption of the Multi-Billion Dollar Aid Business, which was published in 1989. African Ark(with photographers Angela Fisher and Carol Beckwith) was published in 1990 and looks in depth at the cultures and peoples of the Horn of Africa.
My work in Ethiopia in the 1980's drew my attention to that country's claim to possess the lost Ark of the Covenant, arguably the most important relic of Biblical antiquity. I devoted several years to researching this extraordinary claim, travelling widely in Ethiopia, Egypt and Israel, and in 1992 published my findings in The Sign and the Seal: A Quest for the Lost Ark of the Covenant. It was to be the first of a series of investigations into historical mysteries, including Fingerprints of the Gods (my single most popular book with sales exceeding three million copies worldwide), The Message of the Sphinx (co-authored with Robert Bauval, and entitled Keeper of Genesis in the UK), and Heaven's Mirror with photographer Santha Faiia (who is also my wife and my constant travel companion).
I have had the great good fortune to have my books translated into 27 languages and to have been afforded the opportunity to put my ideas before a wide public in two international television series: Quest for the Lost Civilisation (1998) and Flooded Kingdoms of the Ice Age (2002). My new book is Supernatural: Meetings with the Ancient Teachers of Mankind. It presents evidence that the realms we call "supernatural" are all around us, and are real, but are not accessible to our senses when we are in the "normal", alert, problem-solving state of consciousness favoured by modern society. Supernatural realms and beings are however accessible to all of us in the deeply altered states of consciousness that have been cultivated by shamans in hunter-gatherer societies for tens of thousands of years. Mastery of these altered states makes possible a targeted and systematic exploration of the supernatural and of its role in human evolution.

My Interests

SUPERNATURAL: Meetings With The Ancient Teachers Of Mankind is available in stores everywhere and online!

For many people, the birth of religion, spiritual beliefs and mythology traces back to Adam & Eve. For best-selling author Graham Hancock, the journey to this mythical moment when intelligent belief began, reaches even further. . . all the way back to the cavemen and beyond. Returning with his new book, Supernatural, Hancock investigates extraordinary possibilities about human origins, and about the nature of consciousness and reality.

On its first publication in the UK, Supernatural was nominated by the Daily Express as "the year's most controversial book" and described by the New Statesman as: "As gripping as any thriller, but with profound implications for the values and future development of humanity."

Hancock sets out to investigate and discover the truth about the influences that gave birth to the modern human mind. In this new book, Hancock touches on topics including:

• IN SEARCH OF THE INTELLIGENT MIND—From the Amazon to Africa, from France and Spain to Italy and India, Graham Hancock traveled the world to investigate the before-and-after moment and reveal the truth about the nature of consciousness and reality.

• MEDICINES FROM THE EARTH—Graham Hancock examines the medicinal and pharmacological uses of many plants throughout history—plants that continue to thrive across the world, the rain forest, Europe and elsewhere. What effect can these indigenous plants have on our physical and mental well-being today?

• THE MYSTERIES OF THE SPHYNX, THE UNICORN & THE CENTAUR—The archeological relevance of art work depicting half-man, half-beast and the significance of its appearance in artwork throughout time and around the world. What is a “therianthrope” and how is it possible that the same images appeared centuries apart and continents away from each other?

• I SEE DEAD PEOPLE—Is it possible to communicate with the dead and interact with our ancestors? Hancock contends that people have been doing so for ages during indigenous ceremonies that honor and call upon the deceased. How are these ceremonies performed and what happened when Hancock tried to commune with his recently deceased Father?

• DIVINE INSPIRATION—Were our stone-age ancestors stoned? Hancock illuminates man’s historical relationship with beneficent, shamanic plants and how it related to the development of consciousness, culture, spirituality and religion.

• WHEN SCIENCE MEETS SPIRITUALITY—How do we quantify and scientifically replicate mythology and spirituality? How can we prove the birth of consciousness? Hancock goes beyond Darwinism in search of the truth behind the development of intelligent thought.

His quest takes him on a journey of adventure and detection from the stunningly beautiful painted caves of prehistoric France, Spain, and Italy to remote rock shelters in the mountains of South Africa where he finds a treasure trove of extraordinary Stone Age art.
