The Austin Independent

under-discovered bands in Austin

About Me

The mission of The Austin Independent is to feature Austin's under-discovered bands to music media, industry representatives, and most of all, to music fans.
To everyone visiting Austin during South By Southwest: it is more than worth your while to reserve some time from catching sets by (soon-to-be-yesterday's) national hype bands and catch a few performances by local bands featured here. Who knows, you may end up with a new favourite band to write about, spin on the air, sign to a record deal, or simply be the first to brag to your musicphile friends about.
This issue presents only a small sampling of Austin's indie music scene, and as much as we would have liked to include hundreds more deserving bands, The Austin Independent is not a financial venture and we have stretched our resources and donated our time to present this publication in as complete a form as possible. Visit us at TheAustinIndependent.com to stay in touch with Austin music through special features and future issues.
Our heartfelt thanks extend to everyone involved with this project including our contributors, bands, and local businesses who made this happen as well as to our local and global independent music communities.
We are not trying to be the next Seattle, Brooklyn, Manchester or (insert hype city of choice) We already are Austin, Texas.

Influences: HOW IT WORKS

The Austin Independent is not a typical magazine in that it is run like a non-profit, purely for the benefit of the Austin indie scene.

We donate our time and skills to design, photograph, write, edit, and distribute the magazine.

10,000 copies get distributed during SXSW week at the convention center, venues, hotel rooms, dayshows, parties, etc.

The publication is invite-only although we do encourage submissions. We only cover bands we like.

Only bands from the Austin area can be featured because the entire goal is to promote our local scene to the visitors.

Each band contributes a small amount to the printing cost.

Austin labels, recording studios, and other indie businesses support and represent the Austin indie culture via ad exposure.

Ads are far below market value because a.) we know that money's tight for indie businesses and b.) we're not trying to profit off of you.

Collectively, we are able to showcase Austin's indie scene far more effectively to the SXSW audiences than any of us could on our own. We're looking to expand beyond last year and generate even more exposure and would like YOU to be involved.

WHAT DO YOU GET?

Bands receive:
1.) an article, photo, listing of contact info, and listing of dates/time/venue of all their shows during SXSW.

2.) links from our MySpace and blogs as well as connections to our media partners: Austin Music Magazine, Austin Sound, KVRX, do512.com and others.

Advertisers/Supporters receive:
1.) Exposure to visiting industry people who have expense accounts to spend and who need to know about services that we can offer cheaper and better here than in their hometowns.

2.) Exposure to music fans who are here to live it up, eat, drink, shop, and experience Austin and its culture.

3.) Links to your website from our MySpace and Blog

HOW MUCH IS THIS GOING TO COST?

Bands:
$50 for half page or $75 for full page covers your contribution towards printing costs. That's incredible promotion compared to what that could buy you in fliers or posters etc. and its designed to be so low so every band can afford it. Again, we're not trying to profit off of you, we just want you to carry your weight.

Businesses:
$125 for quarter page, $200 for half page, $350 for full page. Yes, we know its cheap. No, there's no catch.

Ad Design:
if you need assistance or advice for your ad design, we can help you. Several of us are professional designers so we can work something out to make sure you have a great ad.
