History: The Seas are an Austin trio that plays avant-garde neo-soul dance-rock for the masses. There’s music you listen to while sipping chianti at a too-hip-for-your-own-good club. We play the other kind of music, which can be described as "street." If you’re not sure what that means, come to one of our shows and then you’ll understand.
The Seas have been playing together since the summer of 2006. They released a four-song rock ’n’ roll recording in the fall of that year, a self-titled, self-released, self-produced, self-deprecated EP that made a little splash in the local scene. The year was spent performing live in Austin, Houston, San Antonio, Dallas, McAllen, New Orleans, Oklahoma, and Shreveport.
The group has made many interesting friends along the way, especially with visual artists. One such artist is Shawna Mouser, the "Princess of Pastiche" of the Houston arts scene. Other collaborators and muses have included Mike Abelman, Bob Taylor, and all the beautiful freaks at the LMNL Gallery downtown.
A new sound is being thrown into the air during The Seas’ second year of existence. Juju African charms mix with slippery neo-soul instrumentation...The house that Bowie built is being invaded and ripped apart and then put back together again, this time with neon read wallpaper and a chandelier that sheds light on the truest soul of man pretending to be woman pretending to be man. It’s an ambiguity that is divine to revel in, for the simple black-and-white answers leave one thirsty for chaos, chance, and a strong shot of rum.
