Cacophony Recorders

Analog & Digital Recording Facility for Austin, TX

About Me

Cacophony Recorders is a recording studio on the banks of the Colorado River in East Austin, TX run by Darwin Smith and Erik Wofford. The studio is run in a very Daniel Lanois and Brian Eno inspired fashion with the unique feature of having no separate control room from the tracking area. Everyone is in one room where communication and ideas can flow very easily between the producer/engineer and the artists. The added benefit of having everyone cohesively making a record together in the same room outweighs separating everyone to different spaces. There are several isolation booths built into the building to put amplifiers in, or even spaces to put acoustic instruments in while tracking drums in the main room. The flexibility for recording a live band all together with isolation between instruments but no isolation between players is very well thought out and affective. Everyone that comes into Cacophony comments on how much easier it is to make a great record here than other studios. A big part of that is the relaxed and comfortable setting of hanging out in someone's awesome living room, but it just happens to be filled with high tech recording gear. Check out the equipment list above to see how well the studio is outfitted. The emphasis at Cacophony is to make the technical process of making a record as invisible to the artist as possible, yet opening up the world of possibilities that are only available in a unique creative environment. We do not subscribe to the notion of modern recording techniques where the emphasis is on fixing every little thing in a computer or making your project sound like everyone else. We run a creative environment where no idea is too crazy and anything is possible. We ARE Cacophony Recorders, after all.
