About Me

I am a painter who was active at the turn of the 17th century. My striking naturalism is now credited with jolting the art world out of its dull Mannerist ways and ushering in the Baroque movement, and by extension, the beginning of modern painting. At one point during my short life I was the most famous painter in Italy.
My scenes are frequenty tumultuous, which is fitting because my life was as well. When I am not painting I like being rambunctious, getting into fights and angering my well-to-do patrons so they won't give me any more work and I will have to move. It is alleged that on May 29, 1606 I killed a man, but of course that was never proven.

My Interests

  • chiaroscuro (especially my tenebroso style)
  • naturalism
  • interpreting Christian symbols
  • the Caravaggisti around Europe
  • fleeing and relocating across Italy (due to the polizia and a bounty on my head)
  • getting into countless brawls (see previous)
  • and being an all-around irascible guy while attributing it to an overinfusion of artistic temperament
  • I'd like to meet:

The great Italian artists: Perugino, Masaccio, Duccio di Buoninsegna, Lorenzo Lotto, Titian, Giorgione, Lorenzo Ghiberti, as well as these famous men: (from top left - Dante, Leonardo, the 'other' Michelangelo, Rafaello Sanzio, Boccaccio, Alberti, Brunelleschi, Petrarch, Giotto)

    Music:

I like what people now call "early Baroque" music. I also hear that Claudio Monteverdi is working on something called "opera" which sounds promising.

    Movies:

    Television:

    What is a television, anyway?

    Books:

    Dante "La Divina Commedia"
    Vasari "Vite"
    L. B. Alberti "Della Pittura"
    Machiavelli "Il Principe"
    Boccaccio's early work

    Heroes:

    My mentor Simone Peterzano
    the Sforza family
    Pope Clement VIII

    Oh yeah, and these guys!!
