I was born July 6, 1910 and died July 13, 1954. I am a Mexican artist, striken with polio, struggling with pain and disability all my life. My paintings reflect a modernist take on folk art and integrate my experience of suffering. I am married to the beautiful artist Diego Rivera. I never knew I was a surrealist till Andre Breton came to Mexico and told me I was.
On September 17, 1925, at about age 18, I was involved in a serious bus accident which left me with a broken spinal column, a broken collarbone, broken ribs, a broken pelvis, and 11 fractures in my right leg. In addition my right foot was dislocated and crushed, and my shoulder was out of joint. For a month, I was forced to stay flat on my back, encased in a plaster cast and enclosed in a boxlike structure. I began painting shortly after the accident because I was bored in bed.
