About Me

Flying Monkey Demons consists of three musicians from varied backgrounds yet a single vision; create, deconstruct and reconstruct their art. Taking parts from their surroundings, life and pure imagination, they interpret music the way only they can. From Kim’s rock solid drumming, Matt’s thick, melodic guitars to Mike’s driving bass lines and gravely vocals, they attack their songs with a relentless power and grace.Based in metropolitan Phoenix, the band came together by chance. Several of Mike’s songs were used as a base to start the writing process. Soon more songs were written and the sound was born. Coming from very diverse backgrounds, they all share a common view in the music.Salt Lake City was Kim’s home before moving to the Phoenix area. Having played drums for over 30 years, Kim’s influences range from Metal to Jazz to Country, drawing from drummers like Neil Peart and Steve Smith. Playing for such local bands as Rave On, Lessons, Last Call and Nine Ball, Kim has opened for such artists as Gilby Clarke and Starship. Kim’s rock solid drumming is the backbone of the Flying Monkey Demon sound.Matt was born and raised in the Seattle area where he grew up listening to a steady diet of garage and progressive rock bands. He first picked up a guitar when he was 11 and by 13, after many months on a paper route, bought his first electric guitar and started developing his own style out of many influences. Bands like, Yes, Rush, U2, Dream Theater and Queensryche were inspiration along with classical influences such as Phil Keaggy and Al DiMeola. Today, Matt’s unique sound of prog/rock/jazz riffs, are a culmination of 25 years of playing guitar with raw emotion and pure enjoyment.Growing up in the shadow of San Francisco gave Mike an exposure to an immense variety of music. While San Jose hasn’t produced the quantity or quality of bands as from the city to the north, Mike took advantage of the lively music scene that the silicon valley had to offer. He played in several bands around the Bay Area, honing his bass playing and his song writing skills. After a short stint in the Air Force where he spent even more time forming the band DVS, Mike returned to the his home to play in and write for a few more bands including the Hunger, which came very close to real success with interest from Sony Records. However, it was not to be and Mike soon found himself moving to Phoenix where he took a few years off from music. With a fresh start and attitude, he is ready to take the music back to the people.
