Teaching life and job skills to Black men and Black women with criminal records. Writing essays, poetry, and fiction. Spoken Word.
Alice Walker. Chuck D. Haki Madhubuti. Marimba Ani. Cathy Cohen. Ayaan Hirsi Ali. Goapele.
It all depends on my mood and what I imagine. Bob Marley, Miles Davis, and Pink Floyd have inspired me lately. Marley is a prophet, Miles is a critic, and Pink Floyd invites conversation.
Right now I’m reading Catch a Fire: The Life of Bob Marley by Timothy White. I’ve learned a great deal about the history and culture that inspired this prophetic icon.I recently finished Miles: The Autobiography by Miles Davis with Quincy Troupe. This is a lively journey into the artist’s experiences with racism, substance abuse, and music.Black-on-Black Violence: The Psychodynamics of Black Self-Annihilation in Service of White Domination by Amos N. Wilson is a staple in my reference library. Along with Haki Madhubuti’s Black Men: Obsolete, Single, Dangerous? Wilson’s text is a constant reminder that White Supremacy is an insidious, demonic, and destructive force that promotes homicide and suicide in Black neighborhoods.
There are many influences. However, I have an affinity for writers. James Baldwin inspired me to write in high school. Alice Walker awakened me to the realities of Female Genital Mutilation in college. Haki Madhubuti continues to challenge me on my journey as a stronger and wiser Black man.
