Planet Of The Apes

About Me

Animals have always been a part of my life. I mainly had dogs and cats as a child. But during my teenage years I became a little more exotic and got into hamsters (if you can call hamsters exotic). Then it was fish husbandry and birds in my 20's, up to now.
Today I am a Veterinary Technician for an emergency clinic in which we see a wide range of animals from brown bear cubs to bearded dragons. I have been in this field for the past ten years. I enjoy my job. It is quite fulfilling.
I volunteered at Woodland Park Zoo in Washington for about 2 years. I worked with Black and White Colobus Monkeys,
Red Rufed Lemurs
De Brazza's Monkeys, Pygmy Marmosets
Goeldi's Monkeys
Ocelots, various birds, turtles.......
I also helped out at the Sarvey Wildlife Sanctuary. That place was a neat experiance because I was part of a team which rehabilitated the animals so they could be free to roam the wild once again.
But sadly that is not the case for every animal - some are to live the remainder of their lives at the sanctuary because they are not fit to survive on their own. But fortunately for them there are humans who care a lot.
My experience with animals, my education and reading many books has opened my eyes to a big world. A place where all organisms, including humans, are all products of the Earth. And how one interprets the earth, their surroundings, varies from specie to specie.
Each animal experiences life according to its' neurological pathways and networks - neurons lined up firing signals through out the body in response to the interactions of the external enviroment. Allowing the animal to interpret its' surroundings, information. And in some, allowing consciousness.
I am very fond of chimpanzees,
for they are so similar to ourselves -- in our physical and chemical makeup; our abilities to communicate successfully with others; to communicate in novel sentences; to express emotion of sadness, to laugh at a humorous situation; our abilities to develop strategies; to exhibit culture.....the list goes on!
It is evident that chimpanzees suffer emotionally when confined to cages to await their turn to be injected with a virus in the name of research; they suffer emotionally and physically when humans burn the forests down, their homes, in the name of human progress; when poachers kill their infants or other loved ones.....they are aware of who they are and their surroundings....they do have a sense of self.....
It is time to recognize that humans are not the only intelligent or self aware creatures on this planet. Thanks to Jane Goodall who contributed 40 years of research and experiance in the Gombe. To Allen Gardner, Beatrix Gardner, and Roger Fouts for their on going 40 year linguistic project. They have brought to light that chimpanzees are just like us humans in many, many ways!
They deserve equal rights to life as we do!
IMAGINE
IMAGINE there's no heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
IMAGINE all the people living for today
IMAGINE there's no country
It's not hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
NO RELIGION TOO....
~ John Lennon
Fear of things invisible
is the natural seed of
that which everyone in
himself calleth religion.
