Richard Dawkins is an Evolutionary scientist and popular science writer who holds the Charles Simonyi Chair in the Public Understanding of Science at Oxford University.
He first came to prominence with the 1976 book The Selfish Gene which popularised the gene-centric view of evolution and introduced the terms meme and memetics into the lexicon. In 1982, he made a major contribution to evolutionary theory with the publication of the book The Extended Phenotype which argued phenotypic effects could stretch far beyond an organism's body.
Since then he has written several best-selling popular books on evolution and most recently on religion. He has appeared in a number of television programmes on evolutionary biology, creationism and religion.
