BIOGRAPHY
VAHRZAW first form under the name 'NECROMANCY' and consisted of high school friends George VanDoorn (vocals), Scott Williams (guitar), Steven Forster (guitar) and Scott Rowland (drums). They played primitive death metal. The bands first show was infront of 800 people at a local 'battle of the bands'.
Scott and George became influenced by the second wave of black metal innovators and want to change the direction away from death metal. George assumes the bass duties.
Forster and Rowland leave the band. Ben van Poppel (a blind individual) joins as the new drummer. This line-up would remain unchanged. They rehearsed old tracks and wrote a few new ones. Released the first demo (home recorded) under the name MIDGARD. Band changes name from MIDGARD to UTGARD-LOKI and then finally, to VAHRZAW.
Released 2nd demo titled 'Shadows of the forest' through the 'Dark Oceans' label (now defunct). This was distributed worldwide (not available). At the end of the year they recorded the track 'Namiros' for a Dark Oceans compilation CD. The track was unreleased and is only available on this myspace page or from members directly. Played another 'battle of the bands' in full black metal garb.
Release 3rd demo titled 'Black Resplendent Waters'. This recording consisted of songs written from 1993-1995. Guitar, bass and drums were recorded live in the studio. The demo was sold through zines and friends and attracted buyers from such places as Norway, Costa Rica, the UK & USA (It’s available on iTunes but all original tapes are sold out). The band plays the KAOS 96 show (in the now burnt down Karma club).
Wrote new songs with a more technical edge. The pace slackens on the rehearsing front and other ideas/commitments force them to disband around the start of 1998.
Band reforms. Starts work on a new E.P. All music is written through correspondence. The old dynamics were still there in rehearsals but magnified tenfold. Recorded E.P in Spectrum Studios in December over 3 days and the result was the much celebrated 'Futile' E.P. (available on official website or through hecatomb records).
'Futile' is released. Pyromusic.net said of the E.P: "Malicious riffs, aggressive drumming, violent vocals, frenetic bass and chaotic yet purposeful song structures are perfectly produced and skillfully executed to sustain an unfaltering energy and tenor of depravity". They launch this myspace site. Record and release the 2 track split cd with 'The Murphy Boys' titled 'Hubris'. They play the first annual 'Evil Invaders' metal fest in Melbournes 'Green Room'. A sampler CD containing Vahrzaw, The Murphy Boys, Elegeion & Greydawn is distributed around the Wacken Metal Festival in Germany.
Begin writing for a new release. They print the first batch of tshirts (sells out in 3 days). They play a show in Geelong with 'The day everthing became nothing' & 'GOD'. The band signs to Indie label 'Hecatomb Records' in Melbourne and also strikes a deal with 'Musicadium' to sell 'Futile' & the 'BRW' demo on itunes. They headline in Geelong with 'Archaic Ruins' & 'GOD'. They record the new 'Acquiesce' E.P, again in Spectrum Studios over 5 days. The E.P is released in digipak format during July and also released on itunes. Officially launched at dream niteclub in september (digipak and jewel case) with the Guild boys, 'The Ninth Path' & 'Malignus'. They play a fantastic brutal home-coming show in Traralgon (after a 10 year abscence) at xscape niteclub late september with 'The Ninth Path'. Writing begins for the full-length. Plans are made to re-release the 1996 BRW demo on deluxe CD format.2008: Rehearsal and writing continues for the full-length album. They play the Arthouse with 'Embodied', 'Dominaeon' & 'GOD'.
