About Me
The man behind URSULA 1000 is none other than the mild mannered, multi-instrumentalist Alex Gimeno. Based in New York City, Alex's style evolved and transitioned from the sophisticated & hip background score provided by his father, a renowned member of the 50's Latin orchestra, Los Chavales De Espana, to the heady rock, punk, disco, funk and electronic dance music of his generation. Alex smoothly moves back and forth between musical styles from the glamorous Jet Set era to frenetic electronica. Alex cannot be boxed in, categorized or labeled, his music is a multi-leveled eclectic blend of styles and genres. Finding a label to house this eclecticism could be tricky. Lo and behold came the smart and highly respected Eighteenth Street Lounge Music label, operated by Washington DCs Thievery Corporation.
THE NOW SOUND OF URSULA 1000, his debut album, drenched in its sound collage of lounge, funky breaks, and pastiche-a-delica, was released to critical acclaim. Tower Records Pulse magazine named it one of the top ten dance albums of 1999. Joining the ranks of the international club pop & loungecore elite, some have called URSULA 1000 the U.S. ambassador to this tantalizing sound!
His second release ALL SYSTEMS ARE GO GO, compiled and mixed from a live session, featured 18 cuts that are staples in his DJ set. With tracks from Japan, Germany, Italy, England and the U.S., the mix gives a worldwide selection of the finest in 60s infused big beat-o-ramas and latin tinged percussive workouts!
Keeping up with the jetsetting image, you can catch URSULA 1000 dj-ing his transcontinental grooves at discothèques worldwide like the prestigious Fabric in London to 30,000 screaming people at Australia's Good Vibrations Festival. He's also done shows for fashionistas like Prada, Issey Miyake, Hugo Boss, Miss Sixty, Fiorucci, H&M, Diesel and Christian Dior. When in New York you can also catch him at his weekend residency at the swank APT.
Alex has also been very busy on the remix front adding his magic to tracks by Felix da Housecat, Quincy Jones, The Faint, Fort Knox Five, Nicola Conte and Pierre Henry to name a few, as well as being asked to remix the theme songs of The Incredibles, The Powerpuff Girls and Sesame Street. He has also supplied music to a number of hit shows like Entourage, Sex and the City and Grey's Anatomy.
Featuring collaborations with Dr.Luke (songwriter to the stars!) and Brother Cleve (of loungesters Combustible Edison), 2002 saw KINDA' KINKY taking the Now Sound to a bigger and badder place where the leisure class meets the beatfreak upstarts on the dancefloor for a showdown! Cheeky Hammond organ breaks, spy caper intrigue, boogaloo shingalings, samba disco, a pinch of electro and bongos bongos bongos are most definitely on the menu! Check out the albums fabulous original artwork by SHAG from Supersonic Swingers and Bottomless Cocktail fame!
Next, we have the mix cd URSADELICA in which Alex returns with his signature eclectic style mixing tracks from around the world that take you from jazzy breaks, mod freakbeats, latin ..s, psychedelic soul shakers and bouncy electric disco stompers!
Alex latest studio album is entitled, HERE COMES TOMORROW, where he explores a mind meld of jazz, electro, latin, swing, ska, bossa nova, hip hop, psychedelia and glam rock. Featuring guests such as LOS AMIGOS INVISIBLES, CRISTINA (of ZE RECORDS fame), MEMBERS OF GENTLE PEOPLE, QYPTHONE, CABARET NOIR, TOWER OF POWER, MISTY ROSES and so much more!
