Back in 1999 to many within the house music community his name was new. His face was hauntingly familiar, but most did not know where he came from. What they learned early on was that when he gets on the turntables, pandemonium breaks loose. Jody B. Rubin is a true DJs DJ. And he is anything but new to the game.Jody, more commonly known today simply as Rubin, began spinning records as a teenager in the projects of East New York, Brooklyn. During that time, he would go every Thursday night and hang out at a friend’s house on a weekly basis when his mother went to her bingo game. It was during those Thursday night jams that Jody truly fell in love with playing music. For some their calling is to sing, write or play ball, Jody’s was to play records. As time went on, a friend of his saw his deep interest in playing music and requested a tape to pass onto another friend to listen to. That gesture opened up a world that found Jody learning from several legendary DJs. As time went on Jody was more than happy learning from his friends and mentors, until he came to the realization that one-day the music would stop. Being young and unsure of the future, and wanting for some direction, he said a soft good-bye to the world that his heart called home. At 20 years old, he left the club scene and joined the Army. The Armed Forces served to be a global classroom for Jody. He found some of the fulfillment and all of the discipline that he had been looking for in the service, but nothing to replace or overshadow his love of music. Wherever he was stationed, he made a point of finding the nearest clubs and radio stations so that he could have an outlet to play his music. While stationed in Oklahoma, he not only blessed crowds on Army bases with good music, but he played biweekly for a local radio show. This was a treat for others from the big cities where House Music reigned supreme, as listening to him play was like having a little piece of home with them. During the next few years, he married and had two children. Unfortunately, at the time of the birth of his second child - he was called to duty in the Middle East for Desert Storm. Upon his return to the states, he grappled with deciding whether to stay enlisted or return to civilian life. Having witnessed combat and the casualties of war first hand as a medic, Jody’s longing for home and the comfort of his music were intensified. Shortly after his return, he separated from his wife and assumed full custody of his two children. With his new responsibility as a single parent, he realized that not only did he need to live a civilian life for himself, but for his children. Wanting them to have a stable home as opposed to the "Army Brat" life of enlisted men, he returned to New York where his mother helped him provide the children with stability. Having invested a lot of time in the military, he opted to continue his service in the Army Reserves.Several years passed, and although Rubin continued to buy records in abundance, he shied away from playing in big smoky venues, but rather preferred playing within the confines of his home. This also facilitated him being available to his children, which was and is his first priority. Whilst focused on family life, he was now playing for his own enjoyment, and was quite content with that, until a proposal of partnership came from a fellow DJ, who was also in the Army Reserves. The two combined their talents and began lining up parties to play throughout New York City. The partnership was short lived, but Jody’s desire to play for the crowd was reborn. In the Summer of ‘99, Jody decided to put himself back on the market as a DJ. Playing for himself, close friends and family was no longer enough. With the blessing of his children and continued support from family and friends for the then single Dad, he made his move. In the Fall of ‘99 Jody made his reentrance to the House Music community by accepting the invitation of Eric E-Man Clark to join several other guest DJs to play at E-Man and Lories infamous "BANG THE PARTY." That night at Frank’s Lounge he humbly entered the DJ booth while ignoring the "who is he... can he play" whispers as he passed. He quietly placed his first record on the empty turntable and patiently waited for the last record by the previous DJ (Legend “Uncle†Ralph McDaniels) to conclude. He gently hit the play button and proceeded to play with the intensity of a tornado to a crowd that was eagerly caught up and blown away. Since that time by way of sets through out New York City, as well as throwing a monthly party called “Redefined†with friends DJ Butch and Shonette Coleman, Jody has gained the love and respect of his fellow DJs and partygoers alike.Today, Jody is on a mission to bring the vibe of “Redefined†back! His first step is his net show “House Music Redefined with Jody B Rubin†on PrePartyRasio.com. In the Spring of 2007 he along with some very well respected and much loved friends will be bringing the “Redefined†flavor back to the dance floor as well. In the meantime, he finds happiness and love with his wife, Singer/Songwriter Jannaé Jordan, and together the two keep the music alive in their home and hearts as well as creative endeavors. He remains optimistic and ambitious. But more importantly, he remains true to himself and his passion - the music.
