Soul Train unlocked many doors for Ty. He was one of a lucky handful of dancers with Scharon Hill, Damito Joe Freeman, Don “Campbellock†Campbell (the creator of Cambellock aka locking), Pat Davis and Jimmy “Scoobie Doo†Foster to name a few, personally picked by Don Cornelius himself, as the Opening Act for Don Cornelius major 80,000-seat cross country “Don Cornelius and the Soul train Gang Presents†stadium tour in 1973. (this is where Don Cornelius gave Ty his nickname “The Boneâ€). With such star headlining as Eddie Kendrick’s, The Whispers, The Silvers & The Moments to name a few. The tour was so successful it was held over at “The legendary Apollo Theater†in New York City for an extra 7 days. Promoting the tour gained Ty access to Right On Magazine that led him to Teen-age Idol, status for many years. Soul Train dancers Damito Joe and Little Joe, asked Ty Proctor and his partner Sharon Hill to be contestants on American Bandstand and with over 100,000 votes counted for all 7 contestants Scharon and Ty received 60,000 of the votes. They both won brand new Mazda cars in 1975.
When Don Cornelius open The Soul Train Dance Studios in Hollywood in 1978, Ty and his partner were among the very first, asked to be a teacher there.
Ty’s Dance Form of choice is a style call “Waacking†(spell with two “aâ€) which he perfected in the very early 70’s by watching and dancing with his “mentors†and the wonderful geniuse’s of: Lamonte, Blinky, Micky Lord, Andrew, Arthur, Lonnie, Billy Starr and Tinker in clubs around the Los Angeles area.
Ty Proctor and his (little brother)Soul Train dancer Jeffery Daniels, started “The Outrageous Waack Dancers Group†with Jody Watley, Sharon Hill, Cleveland Moses Jr. and Kirkland Washington. In August 1978 Ebony Magazine did a three-page article called “The New Generation†on the group. They toured Las Vegas, Canada. & Japan in 1978 (one of the firsts dance groups to Japan.)
Moving to New York he helped form the innovative singing group Breed Of Motion among some of New York dancing luminaries, Bravo, Archie, Javier, & (the late great) Willie Ninja to name a few. The group was produced by Strafe (Set It Off) & Marshall Jefferson (father of house music) Marshall Jefferson said of Breed of Motion (“ I can’t go .. thatâ€). They performed at the last party for The Paradise “Garage†(the closing party) with Gwen Guthrie and the Peach Boys.Ty credits the lovely and talented Grammy Award Winner gold and platinum artist and friend Jody Watley in 1987 for asking him to go to Paris, France to shoot, the “Still a Thrill†Music Video. Jody Watley is quoted as saying: “this was my small way of thanking you “Ty†for inspiring me and for teaching me how to “live†in front of the camera…how to “bring it†at all times once you step out there into the spotlight, you were the only person who could have done that with me.†(the visuals were unparalleled and was before its time) It was the First Major Music Video of its kind to expose the Dance Form of “Waacking†This opportunity led his passage from Dancer to Choreographer.
It enabled him to Choreograph Music Video’s for such artists as Taylor Dane, Levert, Keith Sweat, The Isley Brothers & Johnny Kempâ€s “Just Got Paid†in the late 80’s to name a few.
Ty’s, Taylor Dane’s “Tell it to my Heart†Was also the First Video to Incorporate the Dance Form of “Voguing†Ty was one of the very First urban street Choreographers on the east coast to start choreographing Major Music Video’s , totaling a least 30 video’s in 2 years, many of them gold and platinum artists.
The genius of Maruice Starr break out group New Kids on the Block got Ty nominated with New Kids on the Block for “Best Choreographer†at The 1989 M.TV.Awards. Ty Proctor’s choreography with New Kids on the Block help to set standards for the whole visual concepts of “The Boy Band Craze†that are still prominent in today’s hip-hop culture. Rennie Harris of “Pure Movement†very recently did a tribute to Ty Proctor and others at “The New Victory Theater†on Broadway in New York for being one of “New York Legends of Hip Hop .
House Dance International NYC †in 2007 in New York City acknowledge Ty Proctor contributions to “Urban Dance†by inviting and making him “Guest of Honor†at the 3 day event. Ty Proctor was ask to be a judge the first “Waacking Dance Contest†at Brian Footwork Green “House Dance Conference†in New York in 2007 What’s old is new again. There is a resurgence in the dance style of “Waacking†that put Ty Proctor this time, as teacher, but whether a dancer, choreographer or teacher he has truly done his part for urban dance. With Ty Proctor’s expertise he truly remains a Legendary Dancer, Choreographer & motivated teacher and a progenitor to the urban dance genre.
