The Scallions have been recording for over 16 years. The band is made up of two brothers, Mike and Shawn Franklin. They like to call their sound Avant-Garde Power Pop. This sound combines bits of catchy pop mixed with occasional abstract sounds and instrumentation. Recordings began in September 1990 and were made for their own enjoyment. Influenced by the San Francisco cult giants, The Residents, Mike and Shawn wanted to create and emulate similar sounds. During the years that followed, the band recorded over 100 songs.
It wasnt until 1999 that the band decided to officially release some material. They hooked up with Tom Timony, a former owner of The Residents label Ralph Records. In the year 2000 they put out their first commercially released album, Mud Pie. They also contributed to a Residents tribute album, F.E.S.T.E.R. Mud Pie was really a collection of some previous songs, some of which were reworked and remixed. Following its release, Mud Pie was promoted with interviews, reviews and radio play.
A limited edition single release was prepared for E.M.G. but there were complications with the pressing. At this time, Tom had decided to accept a merchandising position and the days of E.M.G. were numbered. Not ones to sit still, The Scallions were hard at work searching for a follow up label.
The band is now working with Chuck D. from the revolutionary rap band Public Enemy. They are featured on www.slamjamz.com (Slam Jamz is Chucks on-line record label) and are building a solid following. In September of 2002, The Scallions assembled a band to assist them in performing live as they had the honor of opening up a few shows for Public Enemy in the Massachusetts area. The band also released some independent singles and contributed to other artists projects.
While streamlining the Slam Jamz roster, Chuck decided to take a few key acts to release to the retail outlets. The Scallions were one of those acts. As of this writing, the band is preparing their first national release. The new album is entitled Agony through Ceremony. This album is the follow up to Mud Pie. The title reflects the hardships they faced after their uncles death in the year 2000. There are various guest spots on the record. The album is for sale worldwide and was released through Slam Jamz in the summer of 2006 as a CD/DVD package.
The Scallions are working on new material right now.
