Nighttime TV. Before the all night poker shows and crap quizzes that are never won until the last few seconds and even then it's by by the sister of the presenter who is also probably getting nobbed by the cable channel directors, right at the dawn of all night-TV in fact, the Broadcasters had to put out some good entertainment to tempt us into staying up all night.
