Drew Gibson
“Letterboxâ€
Americana is one of those genres that I just never get tired of. However, I’ve come to demand very good production when listening to recordings. I can absolutely dig the low-fi, sparse feel of a great singer/songwriter live, but when I listen to recordings, I’ve become spoiled and a little “slicked-up.â€
Drew Gibson’s debut CD, “Letterbox†is, in my opinion, done right. This is lovely production that helps showcase some great, great songwriting, terrific finger picking, and a nice, smoky voice. In fact, my subconscious kept whispering Mark Knopfler…
That’s the voice that I think of. But don’t think Gibson’s not his own man because he is. In fact, I have no doubt that Drew and his guitar, alone on a stage, can hold a listener’s attention (check out track 4 – “Running from You.â€). But when it comes to getting the greater message out there, the artist is almost left with no choice but to suck it up, get some good production, back it up with great players (like Paul Curreri), give it a good polish with warm, breathable mastering, and then toss it into the universe.
I think people will notice “Letterbox,†and I expect to see the likes of Kerrville, Newport, etc. paying pretty close attention to this musician.
So let's give a nod to Marco Delmar's wide-open, warm production, and Gibson's wise decision to partner with him for this wonderful debut album.
Check out “Here in the Evening Too†on the Stave player.
