The Life and Times of Rob Giles
...As told by Adrienne Harris...
Rob Giles was born on May 14th, in the city of Dallas, making him not only a Texan, but a Taurus as well. Even being one of 6 children, Rob stood out from an early age. The Giles Family Children are as follows: John, Jason, Jodie, Jenny, Jimmy and Rob. One might say it was predestined that Rob be the beloved “black sheep†of the family.
The Giles family was a football family. Rob’s father, Barney, played Outside Linebacker for the Texas Longhorns, so naturally, Rob found himself well on the path to becoming Football Team Captain/Homecoming King before he began grade school. Not wanting to deny his birthright, Rob was the Quarterback and Captain of the Maroon Longhorns, University Park Elementary School’s legendary six-man football team. His team remained undefeated for three straight seasons until the Blue Bruins handed them their first defeat in the Season Championship Game, ending the sixth grade on a very low note. Rob continued tossing the pigskin for the next several years, but never quite recovering from that crushing defeat, he felt his inner sensitive artist taking over. It was in music that Rob really scored.
Being a bad ass, Rob first took to the drums, and found that he was an excellent rhythm man, and could still get all the chicks without playing football. By the age of 13, his band Thin Ice was performing all over Dallas. A happy accident brought Rob to the guitar. During his sophomore year of High School, Rob auditioned for a role in a local theatre production. Wanting to get cast, when the director asked if anyone knew how to play the guitar, Rob lied and said he did. Once he was given the role, and informed he had to write two songs for the play, he practiced everyday for four months and wrote and performed two beautiful songs that were wonderfully received by adoring audiences across the state. Young Rob was ambitious and decided to record his songs, playing all the instruments, drums, guitar, bass and piano (yes, he plays the piano, too) and used these recordings to apply and get accepted with a full scholarship to Berkelee College of Music in Boston. Rob packed up his cowboy boots, and moved east. He was 17.
After school Rob and his band moved to New York City and began touring throughout the country, hitting great music cities like Nashville, Austin, Atlanta and many more. Rob’s signature style and sound earned him a cult following. Somewhere between rock and roll, country and folk, Rob’s music has something for everyone. As a talented vocalist, and multi-instrumentalist, as well as sincere poet, Rob creates music that is both beautiful to hear and intellectually stimulating. While writing and recording his own music, Rob spent the next several years writing and producing music for other musicians and soon found himself fully immersed in all aspects of the music business. One might say, he was and is a jack-of-all-trades.
In 2004, Rob relocated to Los Angeles and quickly became a stand out performer in the Hollywood music scene, playing gigs (that’s right, “gigs.†That’s what they call “shows†in the music biz) at The Key Club, Spaceland, the Viper Room, and The Hotel Café. Over the next few years Rob has performed as a voice over artist for TV and radio, he “rocked out†in a short written and directed by Christopher Guest, and he has composed and performed theme songs for the Lifetime network. His songs have also been heard on the hit TV shows One Tree Hill, Laguna Beach and many others. He has rubbed elbows with artists such as Willie Nelson, The Dixie Chicks, Collective Soul, The Wallflowers, Patty Griffin and more. He was even married to Brittany Spears for 52 hours in the fall of 2005. (Well, that last part might not be true)
In 2006 Rob released his album “This Is All In Your Mind†with Sony/ATV. It has been hailed as “The best record that you’ve haven’t heard…yet†by critics across the country. Currently, Rob is finishing recording his next album “My Crooked Heart†(one might say that it is about his hard break up with a certain before mentioned Popstar, but one might be wrong) and has several songs written for a follow up album, tentatively titled “Happyâ€. Rob also works as a music therapist and is a creator and founder of a production company which is responsible for creating and producing children’s educational musical videos. His day job, which he loves a lot, is producing albums for artists such as Nina Storey, Tim Fagan, Famachine, Laura Jansen, and Lisa Donnelly, among others.
He is currently playing a residency at Molly Malone's on Monday nights, where local acts and artists are welcome to hop onstage and create their own scene. Come see him play! And please buy an album! They are really good:
