Whitney Russell started playing piano and trumpet at an early age. He attended Arts Magnet High School in Dallas, TX and Weatherford Junior College and graduated from Florida A&M University.
Whitney has preformed with Roy Hargrove, Wynton Marsallis, Kirk Whalun, George Clinton, Kirk Franklin, and Stanley Turrentine as well as others.
Whitney has preformed at the ShowTime at the Apollo, Blue Note in New York as well as other clubs across America. He has also traveled and played in Spain, Rome, the Bahamas, and many other places.
Whitney Russell has also led many successful groups in Dallas, Texas and Tallahassee, Florida: The Whitney Russell Sextet, Quintet Organ Trio, Group in Session, Fish and Grits, and now Jazz Hop. His goal is to see Jazz Hop grow and to record his straight-ahead Jazz albrounum and perform. You can find him performing in the Tallahassee and Atlanta area.
Derrick Jackson: Derrick Jackson, Jazz Hop trombonist, enjoys a career as a performer, conductor, composer, arranger, and educator. Born in Valdosta, Georgia, Jackson into a military lifestyle as a son of an army officer. At age of twelve, Jackson's interest in the trombone was encouraged by his 5th grade band director, Mr. Bill Giles, who also made a living playing jazz trumpet and performing in such movies as The Color Purple.
After earning All-state Jazz awards throughout the state Illinois, Jackson pursued his quest for music at Florida A&M University under the direction of Dr. William P. Foster. While attending FAMU, Jackson performed professionally with several groups such as The Boys Choir of Tallahassee, Barry Manilow, Above Standardzz Jazz, Longineu Parsons Tribal Disorder and Jazz Hop. Jackson now resides in Atlanta, GA, where he is currently teaching Middle School Band.
