'NEVER LET ME DOWN' (J. Ivy)John Toney has been playing bass professionally for ten years. From performing in night clubs, while still in high school, to traveling the world with Broadway plays, this young and talented bassist has had a great career, and continues to progress in it.
In his career, so far, he has been able to perform on many stages, playing many different styles, and his body of work shows that. Performing with international acts such as: Ronnie Laws (Jazz), Phil Perry (R&B), Field Mob (Hip-Hop), Richard Smallwood (Gospel), Big Daddy & The Red Hot Java (Blues/Country), Longineu Parsons (Fusion), Florida A&M University Jazz Band I (Big Band), and the international tours of Broadway hits such as: "Saturday Night Fever", "Crazy For You", "Thoroughly Modern Millie", and "Jesus Christ Superstar".
While John continues his career as a prolific "on-call" bassist, he strives on creating his own style, 'Derrty Jazz'. A style that contains samples of all of those styles listed above combined. His upcoming solo debut "Theory Musik" will demonstrate all that which he has learned from all of his experiences in music so far.
A young bassist that strives to bring the style of "Derrty Jazz" to the forefront of modern jazz. Theory Musik, which is the title for the upcoming cd, is basically music based on my life. When I first started playing back in middle school (Carol City), I was taught by my band director (Tyrone O' Neal) to establish your own voice through your instrument, that's what I took from it anyway. So since then, even through high school (Carol City High), where I was basically taught the same thing by Richard Beckford, I've been trying to form my own sound. I enjoy playing as many styles of music I can get my hands on, so I can blend it with what I've learned already. And that is what this album is going to be about. So, in essence, "Theory Musik" is actually "Life Music", and I hope you enjoy listening, cause I'm sho'nuff having fun creating it. ........be your own theory
