About Me

i like time life music compilations (and watching their infomercials), film festivals, bookstores (especially independent ones and used ones), coffee and dessert, specialty shops of all kinds, theme and costume parties, outdoor recreation and sporting goods, conferences and conventions of all kinds, gathering places and green spaces, and lots of other stuff.
among many, many things, i am an activist, an artist, and a professional do-gooder. a peace bringer. just me. being real human.
old school (marcia jones)
in the words of the soaring eagle...
"i don't want to run from feelings anymore. so i dig deep to collect all the pieces of myself i had to shed to survive. now i have to become reacquainted with my loudest most brazen brave voice. i want to become reacquainted with the little girl who stomps her feet and complains unaplogetically and says NO when she feels like it and feels zero obligation to explain herself and feels like "cause i said so" is enough justification for any desire...
now i feel more clear. moving toward a freer, juicier version of myself...
i want the wholeness that is my birthright. nothing less will satisfy me. i insist that it be mine."
...and so it is...
this lil mama is the embodiment of that re-emergence...
i've spent the past few years of my life intensely focused on getting free. getting unstuck. like pema chödrön would say, interrupting life-negating habitual patterns and encountering naked reality. my efforts to recover emotional intelligence have certainly been successful. i am free! i can dance and sing again. i can come fully forward with my gifts and magnificence (and not get intimidated by my own brilliance and human potential). i can celebrate life! i feel like i've shed a skin or protective shell. the bedouin ancestors say that the truth may walk through the world unarmed...
universal mind (alex grey)
co-travelling with kindred spirits...
going to all kinds of places in my imagination, to translate my dreamscapes into my material reality in the "day-to-day" world...
i love and require social support.
i love the smell of citrus zest on my fingers (especially lemon, after i've just squeezed a wedge).
i'm a maverick. a loose libertine.
an ex-workaholic turned woman of leisure and vocation vacationer. a jill of all trades, master of herself.
rooted in reverence, seated in spirit (mara)
a daydream believer.
i want to experience lovers, friends, and hot plates of delicious food prepared with love and intentions of the highest light on every continent and the sea.
LOVE LIST: music, books, learning, delicious food, and cake
major challenges: depression, self-criticism, guilt, shame, pent up rage and terror, isolation, feeling not good enough, early childhood distress, family and lineage challenges. you know, the basics.
despair (alex grey)
i'm a champ because i'm brave enough to be vulnerable, courageous enough to face the shadows in my experience, and crazy (again, meaning courage) enough to wade in the muck, digging for the wisdom rooted in my own experience, and of course, the lotus flower that blooms from that place.
i'm starting to feel like a "grizzly adams" in the world of unchartered territory. who knew you needed wilderness skills to leave the beaten path and make something different happen for yourself? i love the new volkswagen ad: "WOE ISN'T YOU. DARE TO BE HAPPY"
i'm zestful at the gateway; cool and crafty at the crossroads.
gateway (mara)
right now, my saturn return is in full effect. yowzers! so yeah, no more hiding, minimizing, and colluding with my own destruction. my mental shortlist of daily commitments reads: 1. do not kill self (figuratively and/or literally) 2. embrace the hope/fear paradox around your life dream 3. take the path that has heart 4. you are safe and all is well 5. make sure to remember what is good, true, and beautiful about yourself so that you won't be tempted to break commitment #1
uniquely situated. well resourced. highly favored.
friendly, curious, kind, flexible, compassionate.
i'm both a socialite and a social hermit. my friends lovingly refer to me as "the institute," "the archivist," "walking wikipedia" and other pro-geek monikers. i have insatiable booklust--i'm the naughty librarian.
strength of heart (mara)
big thinker. oftentimes, an overthinker. tree hugger. action figure. world healer. juicy lover. peace queen. i live a charmed life and i know i'm a sparkler.
i've learned to meet the winds of change with gratitude rather than resentment. change isn't particularly cozy for me, but i've learned to cherish what i discover from the experience...so i can calm down and go with it. what i learn from the most challenging and uncomfortable lessons usually ends up being my golden ticket for some future experience, or revisiting some challenge from my past. wooopeee!! right?
gaia (alex grey)
rainbow butterfly woman (mara)
this is what i look like nekkid. i mean real, real nekkid; without my skin suit.

Music:

every kind. i'm quite the daydreaming cosmonaut and music is always part of my mind trips. i do everything to music. typing even a short list would be too long. lately i've been exploring my fascination with bagpipe music and punjabi remixes of hip hop and rnb songs. i'm havin fun with this!!! i've been revisiting my old love for glam goth music and latin soul classics. i'm a detroit rock city girl...always. i noticed that i forgot to say hip hop and rap. i suppose the two are so much a part of my life that i don't remember to mention them. i like listening to lyrics as much as the beats. i love clever wordplay.

i'm getting into psyche origami--great stuff. i saw collective efforts and friends (yeah H2O!) open for j*davey once, and that was the best rap show i've seen in a long, long time.

90s rnb for hunchin and seduction (or at least daydreaming about it and dancing in the mirror), classic rock and country for road trips. motown classics and soul or rnb for cleaning up (mainly on sundays), and for thinking about home (detroit). the blues for thinking about grandaddy and our favorite am blues station wchb. classical and opera bring me to tears almost instantly (especially works with dramatic strings like dvorak). i like to dare myself to stay still in my seat while booty skake, crunk, or dirty south country rap tunes are playing (never been able to keep from getting buck when i hear the high hat drums!!!). gamelan for vibing and dreaming of my future trip to bali. bollywood and banghra because i love it. baltimore club music and vogue music for letting my inner drag queen do her thing (hmm! i'm a big girl now! watch out fo' da big grrrrrl!!!)...when i'm feeling cunty and dramatic!

i'll come back to this...

Television:

shows: lately i've been loving reality tv family shows, like run's house, dog the bounty hunter, and little people big world. i also like inside the actor's studio, csi: miami, myth busters, man vs. wild, iconoclasts, nigella feasts, the boondocks, the l word, ugly betty, grey's anatomy, noah's arc, the young and the restless.

people: paula deen (and her sons), nigella lawson, rachael ray, and dave chapelle

channels: sundance, pbs, logo, the tube music network, food network, the travel channel, and discovery channel

instant hypnosis: music videos and reality shows

internalized oppression personified: uncle ruckus--a brilliant character

Books:

current stack: radical ecstasy, jambalaya by luisah teish, homegrown by bell hooks and amalia mesa bains, the four fold way by angeles arrien, gender on the planet earth by ann oakley, a few new age spiritualty/healing books.

i've got a pretty good library. mostly psychology, transformation, spirit reality, sexuality, self-help, health, gender studies, black studies, feminist thought, politics, old english literature, fiction, and all kinds of science and foreign language studies textbooks.

i've gotta read more sci-fi, erotica and fiction for good measure and pleasure.
