Showgrrrl Sublime

About Me

The Nekyia's Showgrrrl Sublime is an intoxicating stage show featuring the finest in dance, acrobatics, aerial and fire performance. It is Cairo Casbah, Vegas Revue, Cuban Cabaret, and San Francisco Cirque—shaken not stirred to a cocktail of body-rocking dance music and live percussion.
Described as "uncommonly sexy", "full of passion", and "impeccably professional", The Nekyia's powerful stage presence and unrepentant sensuality stir up both delight and controversy. With their saucy hips, back flips, and high kicks, they celebrate a long line of burlesque queens, leg show ladies, video vamps and pin-up nymphs, from Mata Hari to Madonna.
The Nekyia's unique style is the creation of dancer/choreographer Kristina Cañizares , a darling of California's belly dance, burlesque, Latin dance, and fire performance scenes.
The Nekyia's music director and DJ, Drumspyder , creates original music driven by his virtuoso live percussion that reflects the emerging sound of the global dancefloor. Playing an array of arabic percussion including the the tabla (doumbek), riqq (tamborine), and frame drums, his original tracks are funky and organic, influenced by afro-beat, jazz, traditional north african and arabic music, and the rhythms of Latin America.
The Nekyia has performed at Margaret Cho's Sensuous Woman, Ruby Skye, The Crucible's Fire Arts Festival, Burning Man's Fire Arts Expo, The Spectra Ball, Casbah Underground, Bohemian Carnival, Cabaret Verdalet, and Arabia Exotica, among others.
