HAYDUKE LIVES!:
Like Cayenne in your Quinoa: Hayduke Lives!
Hayduke Lives! is the name of the bad-ass follow up to Edward Abbey's classic novel The Monkey Wrench Gang. it is also the name of one of the most innovative bands in Minneapolis. Does the band warrant such a name? Hell, yes. Does it keep up Abbey's motifs of radical political messages, unflinching perspectives, and gut-wrenching, majestic poetry? This review wouldn't be written if it didn't.
Most nights, when i see a band play I have no desire to make others hear it the way I do. To each his own, I'm too busy dancing. Hayduke lives! is another matter. During many of their shows I've suppressed the instinct to run out into the street and drag anyone in to listen. I want everyone to have the same visceral experience that I do. I want you to get the goosebumps, the lump in your throat, and the inexorable urge to dance like a cave-woman. Let's keep our fingers crossed that these guys stay in Minneapolis a long time.
ShugE's music helped keep me sane, or at least happy and aware, last summer. His epic, political poetry of fast-enough-to-burn-your-fingertips guitar is haunting, nostalgic, musically strong, and gorgeous. In its freshest and most devastating form, shugE's song-writing is backed by a beautiful, solid five-man band.
Kyle of a paper cup band pounds the drums in his unique style, while Porto of Hunger Bone plays sexy, jazz-inspired bass. Nate rocks the keyboard alongside Andrew, also of a paper cup band and solo-project Webby Moore on melancholy violin and guitar. Each of the band members holds his own, and bring something crucial to the opus. There is an undefinable quality to this band that makes me want to walk most lightly on the earth, to live a more political and decisive lifestyle, and to rock the fuck out. Also, they all have real nice facial bone structure. This alloy of talented musicians is strong enough to melt cops.
A Hayduke Lives! album, on anti-civ records, is on its way, with lots of the classic ShugE songs as well as several Hayduke Lives! originals. Soon we will see what I suspect to be true, that it makes the perfect soundtrack to riding trains through desert ghost towns, planting flowers in empty lots, summer bike rides at 5 am, and barricading your home against the government.

shugE:
shugE is a native Minnesota songwriter recently returned from two years of
making waves in the Gainesville, Florida music scene. After playing in a
series of local bands throughout the 1990’s, shugE went solo in 2000,
playing a sparse amount of public performances while working privately
reinventing his solo act. He’'d play campfires, open mic’s, parties,
protests, and the occasional music venue, —his lyrics and melodies quickly gaining loyal fans. In 2004 shugE moved to Gainesville and made an immediate splash on the local music scene.Within months of moving to Florida, shugE took over hosting the weekly
acoustic showcase at Tim & Terry’'s Music & More, —at the time a dying
hole-in-the wall venue. Tim & Terry'’s quickly became one of the most
coveted stages for local songwriters, and many involved in the G’ville
music community credited shugE’s music and hard work with reviving a
stagnant acoustic scene. shugE also curated the Purple House Kapow (a 35 band festival), an event so successful the venue owners were forced to
renovate and build a new stage to accommodate the exploding music scene they were suddenly privy to.In September of ’05, shugE moved back to his hometown of Minneapolis and immediately dove into a 4-month recording binge. After emerging from the studio, shugE has been playing shows at festivals and venues all around the Twin Cities, quickly building a loyal fan base and reconnecting with old friends and comrades. In September of ’06, (to pacify fans) shugE released two CD’s: “Mpls to
G’ville & back†& “ALIVE IN FL†(including 9 live tracks). shugE has now
been picked up by Anti-Civ Records, a new collectively run/owned
community-oriented label.shugE recently released his new CD "shug07 (or captain buttsex)" on
anti-civ records and toured the east coast with Cell Phone, O' Haste
Annihilation, and Hangun Man last spring. shugE can currently be found
performing all around the Midwest, sharing his original & politically
charged punkgrass music for anyone with an ear for a damn good song.
