Rex Richardson

Jazz and Classical Trumpeter and Composer

About Me

Rex is Assistant Professor of Trumpet and Jazz Trumpet at Virgiinia Commonwealth University in Richmond and Artist-in-Residence at London’s Trinity College of Music. He has been a Yamaha Performing Artist since 1995. In recent years he’s become one of the world’s busiest crossover trumpet artists.
He has toured the world and recorded several CDs with the critically-acclaimed chamber group Rhythm & Brass since 1995. In 1997-98 he toured with the final incarnation of the late great tenor saxphone giant Joe Henderson’s Quintet and Sextet. He has appeared as a soloist with orchestras, wind ensembles, brass bands and jazz ensembles on four contintents.
He has shared the stage with such artists as Benny Carter, Ray Charles, Kurt Elling, Aretha Franklin, Wycliffe Gordon, Stefon Harris, Conrad Herwig, Dave Holland, Jens Lindemann, Keith Lockhart, Christian McBride, Jimmy Owens, Allen Vizzutti, Bill Watrous, Gerald Wilson, Boston Brass, Manhattan Vibes, Millenium Brass, and countless others.
In 2004 acclaimed composer Dana Wilson composed his Concerto for Trumpet and String Orchestra for Rex. He has premiered the work in Turkey, Australia and the United States. He gave the Chinese premiere of Dana Wilson’s Leader Lieder Concerto for Trumpet and Orchestra with the Xiamen Symphony in August of 2006. His CD, "Masks" featuring new virtuoso trumpet works by American composers, was released on Summit Records to critical acclaim in the summer of 2005, and his most recent CD "Jazz Upstairs" recorded live at Athens’ GuruBar with fantastic Greek musicians, was released in March of 2007 and is creating quite a buzz!
