Putting our dreams to work

About Me

I’m produced and edited the video for the AMOR CUBANO infomercial coming to a theater near you!
Recent Projects:
Made in Brazil: Dreams at Work is an inspiring story about a woman, a community, and their challenges and successes in their search for self-sufficiency. Its a story about the people and the love of one woman who started Salao do Encontro so that this small struggling community would have the opportunity to make a better life for themselves and those society deems insignificant. This film is about giving chances to those that dont necessarily have the means to obtain a second chance. This practical and unique community infuses creativity and self expression into everything they do, while struggling to provide education, work, housing and dreams for a brighter future.
Director: Maya is a Central American spoken word poet, filmmaker, and advocate for immigrant rights. As well as directing ’MADE IN BRAZIL: Dreams at Work, she directed THE LAST WORD about Las Manas, a fierce women of color spoken word crew, and she also associate produced the award winning documentary Reading Between the Rhymes, about the use of hip hop in education. Recently she produced, shot and edited the videos for the live theater show Amor Cubano: In a bottle, a tube and a small packet written by Maceo Cabrera Estevez. She is an Artist-in-Residence at Galeria de la Raza and gives workshops on media justice and video production to middle school and high school students. You can find her roaming the streets with her students, borrowed cameras and an interest in documenting and making our neighborhoods better. Maya has also enjoyed organizing events showcasing artists who investigate and celebrate the intersection of politics, media and art over the past ten years. Currently she is finishing up her Masters in Radio and Television at San Francisco State University. contact: mediamuxerista AT yahoo DOT com
THE LAST WORD "Working for years in co-ed artistic spaces, these women felt a need to develop a creative space for women where their stories could be heard and developed into creative works. The result was Las Manas a diverse female spoken word/theater spitfire circle, mixing in hip-hop and fuerte flavors with stories of struggle, identity and the challenges that come along with being a woman."
’The Last Word’ Features: Rosa Gonzalez, Marisa Castuera, Genevieve Debose, Gina Amato, Anayvette Martinez, Cruz Grimaldo, Sasha Dobos Czarnocha, and Maya Chinchilla
Directed by Maya Chinchilla
Produced by Lakeisha Coston With Daniel Volkel, Markus Harter, Peter Sandifer, Thieny Hoang

Salão do EncontroSalão do Encontro began some thirty years ago as a vocational training program for poor and disabled adults, and it still serves some 300 adults who earn a salary learning arts and crafts. However, Salão soon found that it needed to serve the children of these poor, often homeless adults. It now provides day care and education for 600 children each day.

The geography of the childrens space is magnificent, on a wooded hill below the workshops. Small buildings, playgrounds, and a circus tent dot the woods. Children circulate among the spaces during escola complementar, not so much an after-school program as an addition to school. Children learn circus and theater, arts and crafts (some quite good), and reading and writing. Children who wish can be integrated into the adult workshops as they become older.

Salão also keeps an organic farm which provides food for the cafeteria and medicinal plants for the doctor. Animals include rabbits and goats.30 professional teachers make up the staff, and several more provide care for infants.
