Made in Brazil: Dreams at Work is an inspiring story about a woman, a community, and their challenges and successes in their search for self-sufficiency. Its a story about the people and the love of one woman who started Salao do Encontro so that this small struggling community would have the opportunity to make a better life for themselves and those society deems insignificant. This film is about giving chances to those that dont necessarily have the means to obtain a second chance. This practical and unique community infuses creativity and self expression into everything they do, while struggling to provide education, work, housing and dreams for a brighter future.
Director:
Maya is a Central American spoken word poet, filmmaker, and advocate for immigrant rights. As well as directing ’MADE IN BRAZIL: Dreams at Work, she directed THE LAST WORD about Las Manas, a fierce women of color spoken word crew, and she also associate produced the award winning documentary Reading Between the Rhymes, about the use of hip hop in education. Recently she produced, shot and edited the videos for the live theater show Amor Cubano: In a bottle, a tube and a small packet written by Maceo Cabrera Estevez. She is an Artist-in-Residence at Galeria de la Raza and gives workshops on media justice and video production to middle school and high school students. You can find her roaming the streets with her students, borrowed cameras and an interest in documenting and making our neighborhoods better. Maya has also enjoyed organizing events showcasing artists who investigate and celebrate the intersection of politics, media and art over the past ten years. Currently she is finishing up her Masters in Radio and Television at San Francisco State University.

diverse female spoken word/theater spitfire circle,
mixing in hip-hop and fuerte flavors with stories of
struggle, identity and the challenges that come along
with being a woman."
