About Me

'Homegrown' has been on the air at WTCR since 1992. From the beginning, the purpose of the show has been to give an outlet to up and coming musicians from Ohio, Kentucky, and West Virginia. Let's face it, there's been an obvious rash of remarkable talented people from this region, spurring the State of Kentucky to promote US 23 (which stretches from Columbus, OH through Kentucky all the way to the Virginia state line) as the COUNTRY MUSIC HIGHWAY.Earl Thomas Conley, Billy Ray Cyrus, Wynonna & Naomi(aka the Judds), Melvin Goins, Ricky Skaggs, Larry Cordle, Keith Whitley, Rebecca Lynn Howard, Loretta Lynn, Crystal Gayle, Hylo Brown, Gary Stewart, Patty Loveless, Dwight Yoakam, The Carter Family, & Dr. Ralph Stanley paved the way for many artist who would come later to learn from their success. Nearly everyone whose music is played on 'Homegrown' has been inspired by those artists who've elevated from local artists throughout our appalachian heritage, and risen to national recognition and popularity.
'Homegrown' has been cared for and nurtured along by the hosts throughout the years as well. Early on, Scott Frasier & Eddie Riffe worked really hard to build up the music of 'Homegrown'. Then, Jesse James added his efforts to the progression of the program. Now, 'Homegrown' has become, 'Homegrown With Gary & Sonya' with new hosts, local artist Sonya Crites and part time promoter, Gary Newman.
They have added their sincere interest in local music to the vast supply of talent in the Tri-State, added a little offbeat humor and promoted the show to the masses.
The future seems bright indeed, and there are no plans for stopping anytime soon. As long as there is talent in the Tri-State, Gary and Sonya will be there to play the best and brightest of it.

My Interests

LIVE MUSIC!!! LOCAL MUSIC!!! LIVE MUSIC!!! LOCAL MUSIC!!!

I'd like to meet:

We'd like to meet Earl Thomas Conley, Billy Ray Cyrus, Wynonna & Naomi(aka the Judds), Melvin Goins, Larry Cordle, Rebecca Lynn Howard, Loretta Lynn, Crystal Gayle, Patty Loveless, Dwight Yoakam, & Dr. Ralph Stanley. We also love to meet people who listen to the show, and those who've made a project to get played on the air.

Music:

What makes a song eligible for ‘Homegrown with Gary & Sonya’??? 1. Must be relative to Kentucky, Ohio, or West Virginia (meaning that the performing artist has to have some ties as far as having lived and performed in the Tri-States previously mentioned. From time to time, we’ll do showcase segments that spotlight local writers, engineers, etc. but our primary concentration is artists that have worked and resided in the tri-state area) 2. Songs must be studio quality recordings. Some ‘produced’ live music will be considered acceptable upon approval of ‘Homegrown with Gary & Sonya’ producers. The only way local music will grow is if the music played here is professional and high quality. We love to help those just starting out, but ultimately, the recording has to be radio worthy. 3. Radio worthiness as used by ‘Homegrown with Gary & Sonya’ will be determined by the following: a. Timing: Songs will not exceed 4:00 unless specifically pre-approved by producers. The reason for this is, we have a number of songs we try to play each week, and we can’t reach that number with lengthy songs preventing time for all local artists we need to feature on our show. b. Content: Songs will not contain lyrics which are considered inappropriate for the standards of the community. ‘Homegrown with Gary & Sonya’ will never air inappropriate material as our listeners range in age from early teens to retired folks. It’s our wish to offend no one. c. Originality: It’s not a foregone conclusion that everyone who sends music in has done their own original songs. We typically shy away from playing covers unless they specifically significantly steer away stylistically from the original recording. Exceptions occur in Christian genres where many folk record free domain standard songs. These recordings tend to be more acceptable than someone recording the latest top 40 song. d. Quality: There are no guarantees of airplay for anyone on ‘Homegrown with Gary & Sonya’. Our purpose is to play the best music in the Tri-State, and growing the local music scene. In order to grow, we must sometimes make unpopular decisions about airplay. It’s not personal. There are many artists who spent countless hours in the studio creating a great recording and it wouldn’t be fair to anyone to give equal time to someone who’s recording hasn’t been shown that same attention to detail. In the age of self-recording, it’s a dangerous time to be irresponsible about what is high quality and what is quickly recorded and quality is overlooked. That ALWAYS hurts the artist who sends it out more than it helps them. 4. All songs, regardless of how they’re submitted, should be accompanied by: a. Biographical information including how you’re connected to KY, OH, or WV b. Credit information ..ted songs: Writers, studio recorded in, players, etc… c. Contact information: How can producers reach you if necessary d. How willing are you to do an on-air interview? What makes a song eligible for the ‘Homegrown with Gary & Sonya’ Music Chart??? 1. Our goal is to help promote local music and the purpose of the ‘Homegrown with Gary & Sonya’ Music Chart is to help local artists be recognized for do the work required to build a fan base that cares enough about your music to drive your songs into a collection of the most requested songs on the program. 2. Requests drive the chart, and therefore, create opportunities for recognition for the number of your fans who want to hear your music. We certainly take every request seriously. 3. Requests can be made in two different ways: You can email ‘Homegrown with Gary & Sonya’ at [email protected] or you can visit our Myspace at www.myspace.com/homegrownwithgaryandsonya and fill out the form. 4. Gary & Sonya will calculate the final request totals and post them on the MySpace blog (found at the above link) each Sunday on our around airtime. 5. How do we calculate the request totals? a. Every request is noted and tallied each Friday at 4pm b. The most requests (assuming they meet all the criteria of being eligible songs for our program as listed above) will be ranked 1 – 10. c. No actual numbers will be provided on the basis of how many requests have been made, but a percentage of the total requests on a given week may be provided upon request until the following Wednesday. How often can someone request a song? a. Anyone can request a song anytime they like, but we ask that you limit your requests to one per song per day. You can request as many songs as you’d like, but only one vote will be counted for each song each day. (for example, you may request Rob McNurlin’s ‘Cowboy Boot Heel’ once every day and in addition to that, you can request another songs, too. b. Requests above the above requests will not be tallied. This is to be fair to everyone who rallies their fans to get those requests in. 6. The top song on each weeks chart will be featured on ‘Homegrown with Gary & Sonya’ a. The lone exception will exist if a song doesn’t meet the airplay guidelines noted above. This will insure the quality and continuity of our radio product. If you have questions, please feel free to contact us: [email protected]
