"conversations with an alien" 1994 81/2x11" I'm Eric Clark, a self-taught artist/sculptor from West Virginia. I began creating abstract art in the early 80's,in high school. By the late 80's (my early 20's) I had gravitated to an overall geometric style, with the focus on symetry. This same time period also saw my introduction to alternative music - especially live music; especially the grateful dead. The whole psychedelic experience had a profound effect on the way I viewed the entire universe, and naturally became a huge influnce on the development of my artistic style. I also began carving wooden and stone pipes during this time, and as my ambitions grew I branched out to include larger pieces. Being a self-taught artist breaking into the professional scene has been tough, but I'm finally making some progress. Not having any formal training has helped me to develop a "signature" style - it makes my work very unique and easily recognizable as mine. Aside from having literally a few hundred small works in private collections, I have had several gallery exhibits, and am now being actively shown in two galleries in Asheville,NC; one in Boothbay Harbor,ME and am also an active juried artist with work in Tamarack "the best of West Virginia". "Eye and Eye Vibrations" 2004 18x24" The above image is my first poster release,I've had it out since 5/06, and it's getting a pretty good reception. I'm trying to earn my living through what I create. It's a challenge, and a very interesting one at that - I'm glad I live in an area with a low cost of living, I'll say that much. "Emanations of the Crown Chakra (thousand-petalled lotus)" 2001 10x11" I let my art be a reflection of my relationship with nature, in my art by developing an organic style/feel, and in my sculpture through utilizing the natural shapes I see in driftwood and other recycled or found wood. All my carvings and sculptures are made entirely from materials found in nature or salvaged from the scrap piles of various businesses utilizing wood products. Mahogany "sunburst clock". 13"x13"x2 5/8" - 100 hours to completeMany of my wood carvings are done in mahogany, a precious rainforest resource. I stumbled on a few pieces when I checked the "scrap pile" of a business near where I live. I of course made many trips back, and am in the process of carving an ever-growing pile of...travels along the creekbank yield- and Some of the scraps I found turned out to be blank acoustic guitar necks - rejected for a wormhole in the wood or a knot in a bad placement for a guitar - and I immediately thought of an incense burner with a tea light in it - and that's what happened. I also pick up even the small scraps of mahogany and occaisional cherry or spalted maple and carve holders for tea lights - As you check out the various works on the site, please remember that many of them are available for purchase - incense burners, walking sticks, candle holders, clocks, pipes, posters, original works - all hand made and produced by me. Should you wish to acquire one of my works, feel free to send a message and we can talk about details. I'm pretty affordable...
