The Bacardi BLIVE OE: BRAZIL is a project that takes 5 New Zealand musicians to Brazil to collaborate with local Brazilian musicians, record new music for an album and film the event for a documentary. The aim is to create a fusion of New Zealand and Brazilian music and culture.
BARNABY WEIR

Barnaby Weir has played a formative role in some of New Zealand’s most successful music releases over the last five years. Lead singer of the Black Seeds, whose 2006 album, ‘Into The Dojo’, stayed at number one on the New Zealand album charts for four weeks. Creator of the highly successful ‘Fly My Pretties’ show, which achieved sell out performances in 2005 and 2006 and gold album sales for ‘Fly My Pretties – Live at Bats’ and ‘The Return Of Fly My Pretties’. Barnaby Weir musical diversity is also represented in his solo project Flash Harry, and he continues to be one of New Zealand’s most prolific songwriters and musicians.

Staking her reputation on the strength of stand out performances with the likes of TrinityRoots, Fat Freddy’s Drop, Fly My Pretties and Don McGlashan, in 2006 Hollie Smith introduces herself as one of the most talented singer/ songwriter/ musicians in New Zealand.
Hollie Smith’s performed vocals on the Don McGlashan’s song ‘Bathe In The River’ spent more than 17 weeks in the top five of the New Zealand singles charts. ‘Bathe In The River’ won the 2006 APRA Silver Scroll award. 2006 also saw Hollie Smith’s solo EP reach gold sales. With a truly unique soulful sound, Hollie Smith is a rising star of New Zealand music.
As part of the Bacardi B-Live OE:Brazil music and cultural exchange, Hollie Smith recorded with legendary bossa nova jazz band, Zimbo Trio, on ‘Sampa Soul’ and with producer/ musician Apollo Nove , on ‘Bela Luz’.
ALDA REZENDE
Singer / Songwriter
Alda Rezende has been singing and performing for fifteen years. Alda has studied both classical and contemporary forms of singing, blending jazz, bossa nova, samba, contemporary, classics, electronic music and pop. Alda Rezende has worked alongside some of the most traditional samba groups in Brazil and shared the stage with the musical avant-garde of Sao Paulo, Brazil.
Alda has released two albums of her own; ‘Samba Solto’ and ‘Madrugada’, with New Zealand musician Jonathan Crayford. Alda Rezende has been living in New Zealand for two years and is a proud New Zealand resident.

Maaka Phat is a co-founder of contemporary Maori music group Wai, who create new Maori waiata (music) from ancient Maori roots, traditions and language inspired by their ancestors. Maaka Phat links the contemporary sounds of today with the rich culture and heritage of the Maori people. He has previously been a BBC World Music Award nomminee.
Maaka Phat has performed with Wai in the USA, UK, Germany, Norway, Canada, Australia and China. A world-class drummer, Maaka plays drums for the Recloose Live Band.
As part of the Bacardi B-Live OE:Brazil music and cultural exchange, Maaka Phat recorded with body rhythm group, Barbatuques , on ‘2 4 1’ and ‘Ka Hoki Nga Mahara’ and with musician/ producer, Apollo Nove .

Growing up in Detroit, Michigan, in the US, Matthew Chicoine aka Recloose now resides in the beach town of Titahi Bay in Wellington New Zealand. World-renowned DJ and producer, Recloose’s 2002 debut album, ‘Cardiology’ on Planet E/ !K7 Recordings, was one of the standout electronic albums in 2002. In 2005, Recloose released his second album, ‘Hiatus On The Horizon’ on Peacefrog Records (UK) and LOOP Recordings Aot(ear)oa (New Zealand). ‘Hiatus On The Horizon’ features New Zealand musicians Dallas Tamaira aka Joe Dukie (Fat Freddy’s Drop), Hollie Smith (Fly My Pretties) and Riki Gooch (TrinityRoots). Standout single ‘Dust’ captured imaginations and dance floors across New Zealand and overseas as it entered music charts from London to Tokyo. The Recloose Live Band continues to impress with stand out performances in New Zealand, the UK and across Europe.
