Sad and frivolous

About Me

Like all good things it’s taken some time for Firefay to take shape as a band. Lately, things have been changing quite fast. It all started with Carole & Béné meeting in London, through work, and since there was nothing very interesting to talk about related to that topic, they started talking about other things, such as music, and France, their native country (Limoux, and Toulouse, the beautiful south, for Carole; Finistère, Brittany, for Béné). Carole had written a few songs but she didn’t want to sing them, and since Béné was a keen singer, they decided to get together and see how it would go. And in Béné, Carole found her voice. They recorded a first album together, with Adam on guitar (and several related instruments) and production, and the occasional help of Seb (cello/percussions). After a few months of silence (other projects going on, so little time...), new songs started flooding in, but Béné was too busy to participate and at first Carole decided to give singing a go (see Night Spell), before they found Armelle, who’s just been recording The Gargoyle’s Lament for us and will be participating in our first live performances. Let’s not forget Marco, who’s joined us on bass and sitar and has already recorded a song (as of yet unfinished), Stupidly Happy. With still the occasional help from Seb, on oud and percussions. More to come soon! ..

My Interests

Music:

Band Members: Carole Bulewski - Piano/keyboards, drums, vocals (Night Spell, second album). Armelle Racinoux - Vocals (second album and live performances) Bénédicte Vichy - Vocals (first album). Adam Bulewski - Guitar, Irish mandolin, slide guitar, harmonium, production. Sebastian Kellig - cello, oud, drums, percussions. Samir Dawoud - (beautiful) bass Marco Buschini - drums, guitar, sitar
Influences: John Dowland! Late 60s-early 70s folk. Arabic fusion music. Klezmer/gypsy music. Kate Bush, Véronique Sanson, Judee Sill (Judee, when will you get the recognition that you deserve...), Tori Amos, Lhasa, women singers/composers in general. Yann Tiersen, Les Têtes Raides, Thomas Fersen, that good old French feeling. For those who know French-speaking "chanteurs", Brel and Arno (both Belgian, hum...). Robert Wyatt for being such a talented, innovative musician, and such an independent spirit (God that guy went through a lot and came out making that great album "Rock Bottom"). My old piano teacher probably, and maybe my not-so-old drums teacher. Bach, I like it or not, although I'd rather sound like Gabriel Fauré. Syd Barrett. Psychedelic stuff. Hotel rooms in Amsterdam and the temple of Angkor Wat. Whisky and sailors' songs. Stories from the Yemen. God knows what else... I'm a writer, not a musician, really...

Lyrics

I never write lyrics just out of the blue, just because they sound cool, because they rhyme, because they're going with the flow. I write lyrics about of people I love (in the large sense of love, not...

The Gargoyles Lament

I've started working on the second album, with new collaborations. This first song, The Gargoyle's Lament, sounds very French (??) musically (although I'm kind of hoping a bit of oud on top will shift...

Now that the album is as good as done, I just wanted to take a minute to talk about it. I'm a writer, not a musician, that's what I always say when people ask me. To me, musicians are people who are s...
