i perform genre-bending songs depending on what the occasion calls for, ranging from classical arias through intelligent lounge to operahouse grooves and house! Blending soprano with varying ensemble collaborations including guitar, percussion, DJ’s, VJ's and performance art in various private spots, late venues and public spaces, with performances ranging from extravagant audiovisual show stopping treats that last as little as five minutes to tree hour sets.
a performance can involve dramatic costumes as well as unconventional locations and is able to be transformed into a ‘live’ visual clip where projections are layered over a space to paint sensory metaphors and enhance themes. utilising creativity to express a more serious underlying message satisfies both the bard and the healer in me i suppose!
i started singing when I was was very young listening to mum's easy listening and varied delights wafting through the house. I also read almost as much as my oldest sister and got a taste for being a bard, writing poetry relentlessly for a really long time. Along the way, I found a 'marriage of figaro' score in the music library at twelve and took to opera.
later, hearing beats and electronica, I found myself becoming constricted, conflicted and contradicted by straight classical music, and it was mixed up with a nagging feeling that I wasn't singing from a truthful place, that most of the time I just wasn't fully 'resonating', and I knew I wasn't resonating because sometimes I did: and once I had, I just aspired to be in that zone always...apart from the vibrations it gave me, the effect it had on others was pretty much pure love manifesting without words, without trying, it just was and is and i wanted to be able to always access that place at will.
i got so fascinated by the myriad of ways I could weave together more traditional vocal elements with new 'hip' styles....I travelled to perform throughout Australia, Europe, including Germany, Slovenia and Portugal~ as well as a stint backpacking through South East Asia, always checking in on this fusion between my operatic background and dance, tribal and jazz styles, working towards a unique, vibrant and ethereal sound with various orchestras, contemporary muso's, bands and producers. I performed technooperatic treats at many Festivals, including Love Parades, Cannes Film Festival, Lake Geneva and Glastonbury Festival.
i love collaborating with others to develop new soundscapes and artworks applicable to a variety of settings. and i'm curious about our individual personal state of being and our relationship wth community, how these two things reflect one another, which in turn reflects on our relationship with our environment, and on a personal level, particularly our natural environment... and i'm endlessly inspired by nature and the cycle of life and living breath. Just in case you think I'm telling lies, I had a water birth with my daughter who is now 3, and used Interuterion as a powerful calming tool to aid a beautiful drug free labour.
I spent last Summer recording in London with several high profile producers and finalising the details around the release of OrchidStar's debut album, Birth.
