Buzz covers .... At Buzz S&E we realize that Chicago has more hidden musical talent in one square mile than most metropolitan areas have in their entire city. We also realize that Chicago, for the most part, is ignored by national recording labels, but what we don’t realize is, why?
Why has Chicago never exploded with major music acts despite having so many uniquely talented bands? It’s not like we’re Hale, Michigan. This is Chicago, damnit! We have one of the largest markets in the country. Yet we stand by as act after act gets signed out of Los Angeles, New York City, Memphis, Austin and of course Seattle – just to name a few.
Ok, we’ve had a few bands make it big in the last decade or so like The Smashing Pumpkins, Veruca Salt, Filter, Liz Phair and Disturbed but considering how many bands we have, that’s nothing. You’ll probably run across a handful of people just today that are in better bands than some of the shit we hear on the radio – the dude who rings you up at Blockbuster, your waiter, the girl who walks your dog, the guy parking your car, your bartender – you get the idea. So many bands, so little interest. It’s always sad to hear that a band is moving to LA to “make itâ€. And who knows, maybe they will, but when will the day come that bands are flocking to Chicago to make it?
About a year ago I was talking to an A&R representative from a large record company (whose name I will not enclose), and no, she wasn’t here to check out any bands. She was actually here for a wedding. Anyway, I asked her why she thought Chicago was so overlooked, why there wasn’t more label interest. She answered me by saying Chicago doesn’t have an original sound. After I stopped laughing at her ridiculous reply, I started to laugh again. Chicago doesn’t have original sounding bands. Is she out of her mind? I asked her if she was serious, if she ever took the time to check out a few bands while in Chicago. Of course she said she saw a couple bands and wasn’t impressed. Ok, I couldn’t argue. Not every band is label worthy and she did see TWO. However, I did respond by rattling off about twenty or thirty local bands that should be signed, and that wasn’t even hard to do. The point – Chicago has a shitload of talented bands and we deserve more recognition!
At Buzz S&E we want to help these bands get more exposure and respect. We would love nothing more than to help in the creation of a bigger music scene. Every issue will include features and interviews with local bands. We also have a section devoted to telling everyone about your own band, simply called “Tell Us About Your Bandâ€. Just send us a write up to [email protected] and a high resolution picture or two if you have them and we’ll put your band in our paper for all to see and worship. Remember, it’s all about getting the word out. www.buzznews.net
