An object becomes a musical instrument the moment creative practice is established based on its intrinsic properties. Anything can do. Here at process-modified, we are partial to bridges and fences, pots, pans and rails, non-musical electronic devices and water drops. Even though technology can command admiration, we don’t believe the hype: we are curious to see what we can get out of the battered tape recorders, circuit-bent synths and tube escalators.MODULAR BY RULEWe are a London based duo of international background, with interest in everyday life and sound electronics. When we first came together, it was to explore the gap between the popular and academic: we were as drawn to, as we were repelled by both.Consequently, process-modified is a hybrid, a workable solution encompassing both. Within the name itself, process stands for art, while modified means music. This arrangement is circular, allowing for a spontaneous flow of ideas and tools. Our sound installations are easily transformed into rather unconventional instruments; field, contact and magnetic recordings are incorporated into conventional musical structures. Floating above the electro-acoustic beats, you will find a dense collage of ideologies - or call them techniques - set on a path of a serial displacement. As an effect of this transition, the common frame of academic vs pop reference is slowly decomposed, resulting in what pleases us the most: an unrestrained movement of ideas across a boundless field of possibilities.
