Somewhere, out in western Sydney; a noise is being made. Something the likes of which has never been heard before - a chaotic infusion of rock, funk and melody fused together with a little bit of fun. And what are people calling this noise?
XQuabed (ex-kwa-bed)
While the name might be confusing enough on its own the message that these guys provide is simple. Turn life into a song, because its better than sitting there bitching about it (most of the time...)
The outfit consists of three members: Dean Gallagher provides the front-man presence with wit and humour, and his comedic socio-observant lyrics come over a guitar sound chunky enough to match wits with the hard-hitting feather plucking bass lines of virtuoso cousin Mick Gallagher.
As musical history has shown us, family doesnt always make for the best relationship when starting a band. And with the last name Gallagher as well, you think they would have given up immediately but no. When asked how he felt about working with a family member, especially one as loud as Dean, Mick simply replied with a grimace and asked if his laundry was ready yet. I didnt get it either.
No trio is complete without a third member (obviously) and so along came the final piece in the XQuabed puzzle. David Piepers stepped up to the drumming duties for a bit of fun and a way to deal with severe anger management problems that had seen him receive a lifetime ban from Taronga Zoo. Asked to explain what the hell all this was about, Dave drew a deep breath and replied.
This isnt about making a formula for success; this is about making music, being able to draw on a vast array of influences, channeled through the minds and ears of three like-minded musicians and to make compelling, interesting and fun songs that people can either take something from or bop along to regardless.
He kept going and eventually the tape ran out. The most succinct summary was, in the end, left to the man himself. After asking Dean what the hell that all meant, he simply said:
Its XQuabed!
"When 3 men love each other and go into a studio - thats how love babies are made!"
-whiteboydancefloor
"If you've got a hole I'll stick something in it! See this band!"
-Javid van der Piepers
(real press quotes coming soon)
