A rich and intimate look at a man who embodies the word renaissance; this film examines the life of a man who has had many lives; a musician, writer, poet, playwright, and civil rights activist. A native of Chicago, Oscar Brown Jr. is a legendary recording artist who made his professional debut at the age of 15 and by 21 became the first to broadcast news about “ America 's largest minority,†during his Negro Newsfront radio program.Mr. Brown's life segues from these early beginnings to sharing the bill with fellow jazz greats, including Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Nancy Wilson, and Dizzy Gillespie. The film features many people who know and have been inspired by this cultural icon, including Nichelle Nichols, Al Jarreau, Abbey Lincoln, and Amiri Baraka. Director donnie l. betts gives an intimate portrait of a man whose vibrant life story needs to be told. This film is more than a documentary; it is a bridge from the jazz age of American music to the volatile political climate, which helped spawn the generation we now call Hip Hop.-- Darryl LeMont Wharton-Rigby except from Maryland Film Festival Souvenir ProgramBiography: Since attending Fresno State University and studying at the Yale School of Drama, donnie l. betts has excelled in radio, television, and film.
