Poetry and the Spirit: Ancient Mantras, Health and HealingCan a poem unravel emotion? How does a poem reveal? Can a poem actually heal? According to California poet and certified poetry therapist John Fox, plenty of evidence supports the idea that poetry does indeed heal. For the past two decades, Fox has worked with people of all ages in schools, retreat centers, hospitals, and churches, helping others find their inner poetic voices, a process masterfully summarized by the title of his first book, Finding What You Didn’t Lose. James Autry contends that "poetry gives you permission to feel," and Fox agrees. Perhaps the aim and substance of this panel is best summed up by Fox’s wise words: "There is that feeling, shared by many people, that poetry is a specialized form of art written by a special person who knows and understands complex rhythms and rhymes. . . . But we err in thinking that this exquisite artfulness means the process of poetry isn't available to each of us. . . . Somewhere in the mix of poetic expression is a place where people can come to understand that poetry is best used as a vehicle for their expression." To see more of the article go to www.nhwritersproject.org/poetryandpolitics/healthpanel.htm
