Jazz across the Millennium

About Me

As part of a larger arts project, which included managing a successful provincial jazz club, 33" Records was created in 1990 to develop a wider market for UK based jazz artists. "33" Records have, via the 33 Jazz and 33 WM labels, released over 200 albums of contemporary jazz and world music.
The label is run by musican Paul Jolly, whose previous work playing with leading improvising musicians such as Maggie Nicols, Loverly and the People Band included tours of europe. He also appeared, playing as a member of the Krakow Jazz Ensemble, in the Mike Figgis film 'Stormy Monday' which featured Sting.
Among leading UK artists represented on the label are singers Tina May, Juliet Kelly, Louise Gibbs, Maggie Nicols, Paula Rae Gibson, saxophonists Renato D'Aiello, Theo Travis, Ed Jones, Don Weller, Martin Speake, trumpet players Damon Brown, and pianists Tim Richards, Jonathan Gee, Mike Gorman, Andrea Vicari, Kate Williams, Alex Hutton & Stan Tracey etc. A major priority of the label is to provide opportunities for female artists working in jazz and to give debut recording opportunities to younger players.
Among International artists represented are, American vocalists Deborah Brown, Shaynee Rainbolt, Jackie Ryan and Sandi Russell, saxophonist Michael Hashim, UK based German composer / pianist Hans Koller, Italian pianists Aisha HR and Andrea Pozza, bassist Silvia Bolognesi, and the wonderful Italian saxophonist Renato D'Aiello.
Distribution of the albums are undertaken by New Note and Cadillac in the U.K, Spinning Dog in the U.S.A., Tokyo-M-Plus in Japan, Jingo in Taiwan, Kang & Music in Korea, LC Music in Belgium / Holland, Danacord in Denmark & AVI in Germany. 33 albums are also now available in leading New York store - Downtown Music
Supplementary distributors are used for specific products in other Countries. In addition "33" distributes product through artist sales at concerts and via its own dedicated web site at www.33jazz.com. The Orchard are 33's digital release partners.
'Art of Sound' by pianist John Law has been released to wide critical acclaim and is soon to be followed by Volume 2 of the series. Another album receiving high praise is 'No More Tiptoes' from from artist / song writer / vocalist Paula Rae Gibson. We have released a wonderful world music album from bassist Daphna Sadeh. In October 2007 we released 'Sweet Thunder' from vocalist Sandi Russell featuring amongst others Georgie Fame and US sax star David Murray. Our recently recorded album 'Double Talk' by Theo Travis has now been released. Meanwhile our in-house studio 'Koolworld' is busy recording a new album by Alex Hutton (due for June release) and a chamber opera from clarinetist Mark Hardy. Other new releases on '33' include an album from vocalist Louise Gibbs, with Kirk Lightsey on piano, a fantastic album from young guitarist Nick Kelly and 'epicentre' a solo piano album from Geoff Eales. Brian Blain, Jazz UK review, February/March 2007 issue"His solos tell a story. Their lines unfold with a natural flow, especially on the ballads 'For Heaven's Sake' and 'Portrait of Jenny'." Jack Massarick, Evening Standard, 2/2/07. Four stars review" Relaxed, unhurried but imbued with intense warmth tinged with poignancy, D'Aiello's tenor sound thus prioritises the expression of sentiment  rather than the demonstration of instrumental facility...” “...He showcases one of the most attractive and affecting tenor sounds in contemporary jazz. Recommended." Chris Parker, Jazz CD review, Vortex, March 2007 http://www.vortexjazz.co.uk/cd-reviews/sintetico.htmlTina May recently released her thirteenth album in which she collaborated with the ‘jazz great’ Ray Bryant.' Dave Gelly The Observer 12th Dec 2006
This is the kind of album that restores your faith in Jazz as lively, entertaining, grown-up music. As a jazz singer, Tina May boasts the virtues of Anita O’Day, Annnie Ross and Blossom Dearie all rolled into one and brought up to date for today’s audiences. She wrote the lyrics for six of these thirteen songs too. Ray Bryant is gold-plated jazz royalty, having played piano with absolutely everyone for the best part of half-a-century, and he writes tunes that are both clever and melodic. Put the pair together and a good New York band and the result is simply sublime.

Influences: The creation of '33' was simply influenced by the need to document some of the great jazz, and jazz related music, being created in the UK and Europe. We are obviously influenced by the great labels of the past - that strived to put the artist first.
