Sounds Like: PRINCE BLANCO performing 'Freedom & Money' unplugged and live-to-air.
Dub & Beyond - Andy Poolhall - Toronto (May 3rd, 2008)
REBEL DISCOTHEQUE: UK-inspired shots of reggae and dub with a bit of punk attitude is the overall vibe of Prince Blanco’s Rebel Discotheque. Bass is definitely in the place on this seven-track CD as Blanco’s riddim adventures nudge him back to his UK Soundsystem and ’77 punk influenced roots. The result is an inspired release sounding at times as though he has one foot in Horace Andy’s Kingston, JA yard with the other in Paul Simonon’s west London flat.
Prince Blanco wears his musical influences proudly - the aforementioned Horace Andy, along with reggae singers Ken Boothe and Gregory Isaacs, punk ‘fusionists’: The Ruts, The Slits and most notably The Clash, whose singer Joe Strummer is remembered on the CD’s bonus track ‘Davis Road Blues’. This track was exclusively mixed for the legendary Don Letts’ BBC Radio 6 broadcast Culture Clash Radio and was spotlighted in his recent Strummer tribute.
Other standout tracks are the ska-driven ‘Freedom And Money’ - always a highlight at Blanco’s monthly Dub Collective appearance in Toronto and a bouncy dubwise version of Eddy Grant’s ‘Electric Avenue’ featuring the stellar addition of London, UK’s Princess Julianna.
“Rebel Discotheque is here to save our sorry souls with concise slices of dubby perfection. Addictive, dancy, fun…strong rebel music for the future. I love it and so should you!â€
Zoe Street Howe (Paranoimia on RTI FM/Sky Channel, London, UK)
“Prince Blanco's original rudeboy punk rock style is perfectly captured on his new CD. Stand out tracks are the punk influenced 'Play Rebel Music' and the dancehall inspired 'Skanking'.â€
