Yuval Shay-El – Composer, jazz musician (trumpet, piano) & physicist. Born in Israel, 1963. Since his teenage years in Haifa, Shay-El played the piano and the trumpet in jazz groups and youth orchestras. He studied classical composition with late Israeli composer Harry Nadel, and later, during his Master of Music studies at Boston University (1991-1993), with American composers Charles Fussell and Lukas Foss. He composed dozens of pieces for chamber ensembles and symphonic orchestras. His works were performed in Boston and in Israel by prestigious ensembles, including Musica-Nova Consort and the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra Chamber Series and were broadcasted on leading Israeli radio stations. At the same time he pursued an active career as a scientist with publications in some of the major scientific journals and received his PhD degree in Meteorology from Tel Aviv University in 1999. As a jazz musician he recorded several CDs. His recent composition is Symphony No. 1 for symphonic orchestra in four movements (duration ca. 48 minutes).
