Tambour Battant : Ben et Nico n’auraient pas pu mieux choisir leur nom.
Tous deux batteurs de formation, les lignes percussives déterminent leur sphère musicale.
Un cordon sanitaire à l’intérieur duquel tout est aujourd’hui aménageable.
Ayant goûté à l’énergie de RATM, à l’expérimentation de Sonic Youth et du jazz, à l’hédonisme de Daft Punk (période Da Funk / Rollin' & Scratchin') et aux boomers du hip hop, c’est en free partie que ces deux amis de lycée ont intégré la révolution des machines.
Ce fut pour eux, à 19 ans et dans les environs d’Avignon, le temps d’une Drum & Bass où l’offensive beats & bass écrivait les tables d’une seule loi.
Dans cette tourmente s’inscrivait déjà leur orientation musicale future : « on a couru s’acheter des Yamaha car on a toujours eu la démarche de composer.
Voilà pourquoi on s’est toujours reconnu dans le live.
Interpréter ou rejouer des disques aux platines ne nous a jamais attirés.
À partir d’une base rythmique, tu peux tout faire.
Ca fait trois/quatre ans qu’on tourne et on n’a même pas une démo à faire circuler !
C’est le live qui nous a fait connaître. C’est la scène qui nous attire avant tout ».

Tambour Battant n’est donc pas une formation de studio, au sens strict où l’entend la production électronique. Installés à Paris depuis quelques années, ils ont fait leur première date le 20 février 2004.
Peut-être êtes-vous de ceux dont leurs lives font depuis vibrer les oreilles.
« On compose entre nous à la maison. À partir de là, on sort des boucles.
La matière est propre, elle pourrait sortir telle quelle. Puis sur scène, on l’adapte pour le live.
On s’amuse avec, en suivant une sorte de trame bien arrangée, conçue en amont.
Ce n’est donc pas de l’improvisation pure et dure, même si on s’aménage forcément des plages pour.
On n’est pas dans le free style, mais plutôt dans l’improvisation telle que le jazz l’a pensée.
Car le soucis d’efficacité et de qualité sonore ne nous quittent jamais.
C’est aussi notre style musical qui nous impose cette façon de faire.
Dans un environnement technoïde, plus aérien, on peut plus aisément imaginer improviser.
On vient plus du rock et du hip hop que de la techno ».
Aux prémices, chacun composait de son côté pour en faire ensuite livraison dans un pot commun.
Avec la pratique (et ce premier album) est arrivée une vraie complémentarité, où les envies et les idées s’harmonisent sans trop de compromis.

Tambour Battant s’épanouit ici dans une forme plurielle de Breakbeats.
« The Missing Link » fait la synthèse de quatre années de lives.
Bien sûr, on retrouve leur morceau étendard Atomik Circus, mais soigneusement remixé par leurs soins, pour pimenter le plaisir de cet évident rdv.
À contrario du format vinyle, le duo a resserré la durée des morceaux pour faciliter l’accessibilité et le confort d’une écoute « à la maison ».
En ressort une forte impression de relief : lignes mélodiques (le duo reste impressionné par les tissages mélodiques de Radiohead) et additions de gimmicks.
Un flux d’émotions aux variations tenaces, empruntes de légèreté, de clins d’oeil et même d’humour : « la Drum nous a trop poussé dans le dark.
On ne s’y retrouve plus vraiment car on a l’impression qu’elle est devenue une musique d’ingénieurs du son qui s’écoutent entre eux.
Les mecs poussent le bouchon toujours plus loin en terme technique.
Comme dans le skate, ils sont dans des figures, ils utilisent un peu toujours les mêmes breaks.
À moins d’avoir une grosse culture du mouvement et de ses productions, tu as toujours l’impression d’écouter la même chose ».

Piochés dans son cercle élargi de rencontres artistiques, les featurings bousculent la tradition jamaïcaine pour rejoindre la nu-sckool UK, lui préférant la mélodie au taost, voire l’ânonnement stylisé : « on a poussé tous les Mc’s à épouser ce parti pris ».
De plus en plus installés dans la culture du bootleg et du remixe, le duo a repris les morceaux chantés déjà en boîte, conservant uniquement les parties vocales pour modifier les instrumentaux après coup.
La prestation vocale décalée et prestement écrite de Youthman (La tribue des singes) participe à la surprise…
En 17 morceaux, Tambour Battant sort donc des figures de style qu’impose « une Drum & Bass trop puriste », en conservant le meilleur de son efficacité et de sa rythmique frontale.
Musicien touche-à-tout (guitare, claviers…), créateurs de FX Music (une structure de music design), aux manettes de plusieurs projets vocaux ou hip hop plus traditionnel, le duo ne met pas tous ses BB dans le même berceau.
Et signe un album intéressant, artisanal, dynamique et contemporain, annonciateur d’une transition de parcours.

YOUTHMAN
Mc, dj et producteur FR, Membre de Central Massive (avec Redeyes et Brooxs), Membre du Audio Unit (avec Le Lutin) « La première fois qu’on a joué avec lui, c’était au Cabaret Sauvage en 2004 (Paris), dans une « Tekaway ».
C’était une grosse date, on a halluciné d’être bookés là-bas !
Youthman est une référence dans le milieu, c’est un bon producteur, il sait s’enregistrer, il a un bon flow.
Ici, il a changé de style. On ne s’y attendait pas, c’est surprenant et franchement efficace ».

JAMALSKI
Mc - Membre du collectif Boogie Down Production (crew de KRS-One),(US) « C’est un parrain, un daron ! C’est lui qui est venu nous voir, il a tout de suite accroché, il est venu sur scène chanter avec nous.
Il a fait l’effort d’écrire un texte et il est sorti de ses phases habituelles, en conservant son flow bien marqué hip hop / ragga.
Quand il envoie, il envoie en bloc, il ne rigole pas. C’est clair, il nous a tiré vers le haut.
On est en train de composer un track pour son prochain album. ».

WAPI
Mc - Membre de Sub Culture (FR) « C’est un ami. C’est lui qui nous a fait jouer la première fois en 2004.
Il est organisateur de soirée et Mc.
Il a sur le feu un projet hip hop dont nous composons la plupart des tracks.
Pour nous, il a chanté en anglais, mais il écrit surtout en français et c’est une très bonne plume, dosée d’humour».

WizzLL
Mc - Membre de Quality Beat (FR) « Un pote Irlandais qui habite à Londres. Il était de passage à Paris pendant quelques années.

TAÃŽWAN
Mc – Membre du Liquid Wicked (FR) « C’est un gars qui monte, il est tout frais.
Par le passé, on a déjà joué ensemble et sa prestation était convaincante, c’était une bonne rencontre.
On aime son grain de voix et pour l’album, il est sorti des stéréotypes du ragga qui nous gonflent.
Il nous offre la touche dancehall qu’on désirait».

OSCAR BURTON
Membre des Mas I Mas (FR) « C’est un des cas particuliers de l’album. Sa partie vocale date d’il y a deux/trois ans déjà.
On a conservé le côté un peu planant de l’instru en lui additionnant une basse mélodique bien ronde.

ABRAXAS
Mc – Membre de Kontre Coorant, BDSF, les Trolls où L’Officine (FR) « On l’a rencontré par l’intermédiaire d’Alexis (Mas I Mas) et on l’a entendu avec l’Officine.
Comme il est installé à Marseille actuellement, on a bossé par Internet.
C’est un gars très actif et ouvert. Il vient du hip hop mais reste perméable à la scène électronique.
Il a un vrai grain de voix, sombre, très street. Le second cas particulier de l’album. ».

DIESS
Turntablist, scratcheur, créateur de Diess Prod (FR) « Un gars old school qui produit du vinyle de scratch. Dernièrement, il a sorti du Pushy ! .
C’est un morceau de pur scratch, fait par un vrai connaisseur.
On va également travailler avec lui sur la distribution de nos futurs vinyles ».

SHERIFF GALE
Chanteur reggae (Ghana) « La conception de ce morceau a pu se faire grâce à Nash, un scratcheur d’origine
ghanéenne actuellement installé à Marseille.
Auparavent, il a produit un album de reggae au Ghana avec Sheriff Gale, un producteur, auteur, compositeur du pays.
Ce morceau est en fait un remixe ».

ADRIEN SAUVAGET
Musicien et producteur de Drum & Bass (FR) « C’est un type complet qui est très fort à la guitare.
On l’entend déjà dans le morceau avec Wizzll où il joue un peu à la Portishead.
Ce morceau-là était à la base une des nombreuses expérimentations faites à la maison.
On l’a construit autour des parties de guitare improvisée
sur la durée. On a ensuite retravaillé la rythmique ».

TAMBOUR BATTANT THE MISSING LINK CD Album out nowTAMBOUR BATTANT release their plural form of breakbeat infused with drum & bass, hip-hop and dancehall; THE MISSING LINK is a handcrafted, energetic and cutting edge collection of explicit tracks featuring a myriad of MCs (JAMALSKI, boogie down productions US; YOUTHMAN, central massive FR…).

Ben and Nico couldn’t have chosen a better name.
Both drummers by trade, percussion lines have always determined their musical style, acting as a solid anchor around which everything else is fluid and flexible.
Having relished the energy of Rage Against the Machine, the experimentation of Sonic Youth and Jazz music, the hedonism of Daft Punk (Da Funk / Rollin’ & Scratchin’ period) and the booming days of hip-hop, it was at free parties that the two school friends discovered their passion for rolling bass and broken beats. But at 19 years old, tormented by the aggressive, formulaic drum & bass that they were hearing, the pair took the initiative to produce their own interpretation of breakbeat:‘We ran out to buy a Yamahah because we were always attracted to the idea of composing. That’s why we established ourselves on live sets. Playing and mixing vinyl’s has never appealed to us. Given a basic rhythm we can do anything. We’ve been touring for three or four years and we haven’t even got a demo to give out! It’s by playing live that people know us. We’re drawn to the stage more than anything else.’

TAMBOUR BATTANT is not a group developed by strict electronic production. Toying with riffs and gimmicks, they manipulate the rigid structure of the music using a method reminiscent of jazz improvisation.
‘We compose together at home. That’s how we get the loops. The material is clean-cut and tidy and could be released as it is, but we adapt it for playing live at concerts. We have fun with weaving the parts together – its well thought out and structured, not pure improvisation, even if we do allocate sections for doing that. We don’t freestyle the tracks but improvise them in much the same way as jazz musicians. Efficiency and sound quality are paramount for us. Also, it’s our personal style that determines the way we do things. We come from more of a rock and hip-hop background than a techno one.’

The pair were used to producing their parts independently and then deciding which ones to use. Their methods have now evolved and while producing this album the duo co-created complimentary parts that unite their intentions, ideas and desires without compromise.
Tambour Battant unleash their charismatic form of breakbeat with The Missing Link – the product of four years of live shows. The length of the tracks has been adapted from the vinyl format and rearranged especially for the CD album, with a carefully remixed version of the flagship single Atomik Circus, sharpened up for optimal listening pleasure. Melodic riffs (influenced by the harmonies of Radiohead) and humorous tweaks really spring out from this collection: ‘Drum & bass pushed us towards the dark and serious. We don’t really do that anymore because we felt like D’n’B had become something for sound engineers to listen to between themselves. Every guy wants to be more technical than the last but they always use the same sort of breaks and you end up with the impression that you’re listening to the same track over and over.’
Hand-picked from their large circle of musical friends, the guest MCs add their personal flow to each track. Be it traditional Jamaican, UK nu-skool vibes or Tanzanian rhythms, there is some serious musical crossbreeding on this album. The staggering performance by Youthman of the lyrically nimble ‘La Tribue des Singes’ (‘Monkey Tribe’) is one of the refreshing surprises. Increasingly familiar with the bootleg and remix culture, for some of the tracks the duo asked for songs already sung at concerts so that they could conserve the vocal part and modify the instrumental.
In 17 tracks TAMBOUR BATTANT leaves the confines of pure drum & bass far behind while excellently conserving its most efficient rhythms. Multi-talented musicians (drums, guitars, keys…), creators of FX music (a crafty, design structure of music), piloting beats for several projects including more traditional hip-hop, it is clear the duo are not putting all their eggs in one basket. Their zest and zeal are evident in this entertaining, handcrafted, dynamic album that paves the way for new genre of musical transition.
The Participants:
JAMALSKI (MC US) – Member of the collective Boogie Down Productions (KRS1’s crew) ‘He’s the godfather! It’s him that came to see us, he was hooked straight off and he came on stage to sing for us. He made the effort to write the lyrics and step outside of what he’s used to while keeping his well-known hip-hop / ragga flow. Once he’s started he really gives it everything, a solid piece with no messing around. It’s clear that he pulled us to the top. At the moment we’re composing a track for his new album.’
MC YOUTHMAN (MC FR) – MC, DJ and producer, member of Central Massive (with Redeyes and Broox), member of Audio Unit (with Le Lutin) ‘The first time we played with him was at Caberet Sauvage in 2004 (Paris) in a “Tekaway”. It was a big gig; we couldn’t believe we’d been booked for it! Youthman is well known on the scene, he’s a good producer, he knows how to record and he’s got a good flow. His style is different on this track. We weren’t expecting that but its surprising and truly effective’.WAPI (MC FR) – Member of Sub Culture ‘He’s a friend. It’s him that got us the first gig in 2004. He organises concerts and MC’s. He’s got a hip-hop project on the go that we’re producing most of the tracks for. He sang in English for us but he writes mainly in French and he’s got lots of talent, dosed with humour.’
WizzLL (MC UK) – Member of Quality Beat ‘He’s an Irish mate who lives in London. He was around in Paris for a few years.’
TAIWAN (MC FR) – Member of Liquid Wicked ‘He’s an upcoming MC, really fresh. We’d already played together in the past and his performance was really convincing, it was a great meeting. We like his heavy, grainy voice and for the album he broke away from the stereotypical ragga that we find irritating.’
OSCAR BURTON (FR) – Member of Mas I Mas ‘This is one of a few particular tracks on the album. His vocal is two or three years old. We kept the part of the instrumental that’s a bit menacing and added a nice round, melodic bass line.’
ABRAXAS (MC FR) – Member of Kontre Coorant, BDSF, Les Trolls and L’Officine ‘We met him through an intermediary of Alexis (Mas I Mas) and we’d heard him with L’Officine. Seen as he’s living in Marseille at present, we worked over the Internet. He’s a really active and open guy. He comes from hip-hop but leaks onto the electro scene. He’s got real texture in his voice; it’s sullen and really street. This is the second track which is especially particular.’
DIESS (FR) – Turntablist, scratcher, creator of Diess Prod ‘An old school guy who produces scratch vinyl. His last release was on Pushy! It’s a track of pure scratching made by a real expert. We’re also going to work with him on the distribution of our vinyl in the future.‘
SHERIFF GALE (Ghana) – Reggae singer ‘We were able to do this track thanks to Nash, a scratch DJ from Ghana who lives in Marseille. He had previously produced a reggae album in Ghana with Sheriff Gale, a producer, author and composer of the country. This track is in fact a remix.’
ADRIEN SAUVAGET (FR) – Musician and drum & bass producer ‘He’s an all-round good musician who is really strong on the guitar. You can already hear him featuring on the track with WizzLL where he plays a bit Portishead style. At first this track was one of the many experiments we did at home. We constructed it around improvised guitar parts then reworked the rhythm.’
