Mallory & McCall/Skeleton Crew Pirate Band

About Me

MALLORY & McCALL

have performed together as eclectic entertainers, and husband and wife, since 1973. Fourteen years of that was with our "Janus Company Radio Theatre," broadcast (usually live) weekly on KPFK Los Angeles. Some of the songs posted here were from Radio Musical Farces we've written. In our current incarnation, we more usually perform live on a stage. Mallory sings solo and lead vocals and Janna (McCall) sings backup and accompanies on antique suitcase pump organ, piano and other keyboards. Sometimes she adds uke, accordion and other assorted musical implements.

When performing as the SKELETON CREW PIRATE BAND, the group doubles in size with the addition of Dennis "Black Patch" Patterson and Dennis "Cannonball" Gilmore. These rowdies add a unique sound to the lively crew for swashbuckling pirate music.

We also perform (usually in costume) songs of the IRISH, CIVIL WAR, VICTORIAN ERA, WILD WEST (Calamity and Baritone Bill), DICKENS (HOLIDAY and readings, plus year-round presentations of Charles Dickens and the songs he and his circle loved to perform), TURN OF THE 20th CENTURY, CLASSIC BROADWAY, FOURTH OF JULY (Americana: In the Good Old Summertime) and a lot more. New is "QUEEN VICTORIA and her SINGING EQUERRY," performing songs of her time and taste (which was much more lively than you'd think!). Great novelty for a special party or for re-enactors or anyone else who wishes to be dubbed a "KNIGHT" or "DAME." Have your special someone be formally be proclaimed "Dame!" Remember, this queen is amused and far from dull. (Although our shows are historically based, they are far from dry and very often quite funny. We tailor our shows to what is needed.)

We write some of our own special material which includes pirate songs, farce and satire: "This is My Night to Howl" (Werewolf! the Musical), "The Last of the Red-Hot Mummies" (Two on the Nile or That Old Fashioned Mummy of Mine), "Aces and Eights" (the death of Wild Bill) and all sorts of other things. It's entertaining and fun! Hopefully--that's why we're here--we'll be able to upload some MP3s for you to enjoy.

A note to our friends: You are all our "top friends" because either you asked to join us, or accepted our invitation. We'd like to show you all. Instead we are rotating the pictures from time to time--it's the best we can think of. If you know how to display you all, please message us! If you don't see yourself right at this moment, you'll be there soon! Now if we only had a system to keep track of who appeared when! Thanks, good folk for your support!

Band Members: Many of you will remember Jon Lackey, tall, slender, imposing, playing recorders with us and, most remarkably, wire strung Irish harp in this own, exciting style at Renaissance festivals in the Southern California area, as well as SCA events and the Mythopeodic Society, creating theatrical events and never failing to amaze us with his sense of wonder. This true Renaissance man was an accomplished musician, artist, writer, composer, mentor and free spirit.

To his personal amusement, he is perhaps best known for creating the monster in "The Creeping Terror," one of the all time classic D science fiction films that has become a cult favorite.

Jon died last month of cancer. He has touched us, taught us and entertained us with his multi talents. He will be missed for more than the lively recorder he added to Mallory & McCall performances or the striking harp playing that enchanted fairegoers. He will be remembered as a friend the likes of whom are rare and special. For further information, see our blog.

CURRENTLY THE "BAND" MEMBERS ARE:

MALLORY (vocals) and (Janna) McCALL (vintage pump reed organ, keyboards, synth, backup vocals, uke, etc), aka "Captain Mal de Mer" and "Mac the Wife" when in Pirate drag. Also known as "Baritone Bill" and "Calamity" out west. There's more, but that should be enough for M & Mc for the moment. All the cuts on this site also feature Dennis Gilmore. Frequently heard playing with M & Mc is Dennis Patch Patterson, who joins us on guitar, mando and pennywhistles.

"Who...are You?"

THE SKELETON CREW PIRATE BAND also includes DENNIS "Black Patch" PATTERSON: Whistles, guitars, vocals and other goodies and DENNIS "Cannon- ball" GILMORE: Bass, Guitars, vocals and other exotic strings. Cannonball is producing our recordings.

That's us! On the very top of the world!
Influences: The wild and wooly past!

Sounds Like: Nothing else. We're musical performers/actors. We strive to discover how one might sound and act as a pirate, or someone from the Civil War, or Queen Victoria, to name a few examples. We are influenced by folk and show tunes and Irish pub bands, but mostly we are ourselves (or the people we portray) performing in a style that evokes another time with the goal of being entertaining.
