You know you’ve made it when they name a suburb after you. Or maybe those buses in Canberra marked ‘Fraser’ are actually ferrying punters to the man himself. Well they always say that DJ’s get all the routes, I guess in this case they were right…
2006 saw Chris Fraser rocket into first place in the ACT and 25th spot in the national ITM50 DJ rankings. Looking like the bastard love child of Han Solo and Chewbacca , Chris has piloted the good ship Canberra through uncharted regions for far longer than Sally has been poncing around Home and Away, the only difference is that his boobs have more or less stayed the same size!
In 2007 he’s made the long awaited move to the big smoke, taking up residence in Sydney as marketing manager at the Central Station label, and embarking on a national tour to promote his first mix CD release ‘Raw’. With the tour taking in Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, Auckland, Perth, Adelaide, Hobart, Cairns, Canberra, Gosford, Nowra and even Albury, this year’s seen Fraser take to the national stage in a serious way. Add to that his remix of Dan Le Sac Vs Scroobius Pip’s anthemic ‘Thou Shalt Always Kill’ helping to propel the track to number 1 on the ARIA Club Chart, and it’s safe to say Christmas in the Fraser household’s likely to be a very merry affair indeed.
Since the top 5 dance chart smash 'Burning Hands' (with fellow Canberran Nash T) in 96, Chris has produced releases on labels such as Vicious, EQ Grey,Release Records, Vapour and Compression, and developed a reputation as an in demand remixer. As North Atlantic he received support from the likes of Sasha, Digweed, Satoshi Tomiie, Danny Howells, Steve Lawler, Hernan Cattaneo and others, while as State Circle he featured on the Ministry Of Sound Annual and spent 14 weeks in the ARIA club top 20, all guaranteeing that when he hangs up the styluses, he’ll have more records to his name than Robert Downer Jnr and Charlie Sheen combined.
More recently Fraser’s emerged from the studio armed with more heavy calibre weapons, including the monster ‘Zdarlight’ influenced reworking of Andy J’s ‘I Will Have You’, which stormed the ARIA Club Chart top 10 reaching number 4. An avalanche of mixes have followed in quick succession for the likes of TV Rock, Deepface, Stephen Gori, Jeff Drake & Nash T, DJ Hyper, Sidney & Superfly. While his unreleased mix of rockers Grinspoon’s ‘Chemical Heart’ garnered widespread acclaim and still gets plays on national youth network Triple J.
Another piece of work that’s cemented Fraser’s position in the A-list of Australian DJ/producers is his mix of ‘Breakaway’ by Inaya Day. Fraser’s monstrous main room electro house version of Inaya Day’s remake instantly became the lead version on the release and singlehandedly propelled the tune to A-grade smash status and reaching the 3 spot on the ARIA Club Chart. On the original front, ‘Get Loose’, ‘Warning’, ‘Push’, ‘Whiplash’ and a recent collaboration with Boston vocalist Marcie are all due for release in 07/08 on labels like 1980 Recordings (UK) and System Recordings (US).
In the DJ box, a set from Fraser entails anything from house, electro, breaks, tech, to progressive, rocking main room electro house business and rock elements masterfully brought together with creative FX and acapella work by a DJ whose every move behind the decks conveys a long and abiding passion for dance music.
Now, if he can just get used to the lack of roundabouts, porn, fireworks and legalised massage parlours, it’s bound to be a happy ending for the guy formerly known as ‘the man from Canberra’.
