Native authors, actors, musicians, performers, thinkers, film-makers, healers (see above, don't get pompous on me!!), artists of many backgrounds, cool people in general who love life and who are pursuing goals with passion & commitment!
I created my own profile using nUCLEArcENTURy.COM and you should too!
Native traditional & contemporary music, roots in 80's post-punk/industrial/new wave, blues, jazz, and a real appreciation for hiphop/rap though I don't claim to live that experience in any real way. Oh, and "Tenacious D..." I'll put it here instead of in "greatest movies of all time..."
Anything by Kevin Smith... I can get into the world of Bruce Campbell a bit with my friends though I don't seek it out on my own... Jane Austen movies, chick-flicks (I have a solid collection of romantic comedies which I do not apologize for!), LOTR... and if only distribution was available I could stock up on the work of Native film-makers, but alas it's kind of a challenge. Romy & Michelle's High School Reunion and Grosse Point Blank, High Fidelity, HUSTLE & FLOW, Vanilla Sky, A Beautiful Mind, Memento, Ray... and anything with Adam Sandler, Jim Carey, Jack Black, Mike Myers or Drew Barrymore in 'em, for those feel-good times. Ahh, Adam Sandler in Spanglish, and Jim Carey in Cable Guy and Mike Myers in Club 54... yes those boyz are good in serious roles. Ultimate in cool: Honey Moccasin, by Shelley Niro!!!!!!!
The Colbert Report, The Daily Show. Or is it The Daily Show, The Colbert Report? Yeah, I like Grey's Anatomy and ER, yeah, I like The Amazing Race. I love House. Comedy/news, comedy/news, medical, medical, reality and medical.
Sci-fi/fantasy, mostly fantasy like Marion Zimmer Bradley & Stephen R. Donaldson, tons of film & theatre books...And of course, plays, poetry, fiction & non-fiction by Nish/Native authors.Strong Women Stories (Lawrence/Anderson, eds.) has some of my writing in it, and so does v. 29.2 of the Atlantis Women's Studies Journal, same editors. I strongly recommend that confused (or apologetic -- see my blog) urban Native people read "Real Indians & Others" by Bonita Lawrence... and some self-righteous "real NDNs" could stand to read it too. Poets Chrystos & Joanne Arnott are faves & not just because they're really kind to me! Conquest, by Andrea Smith, A Recognition of Being by Kim Anderson, Without Rezervation ed. by Kateri Damm, and Indigenizing The Academy are also on my "cool/useful" list.
Betty Pamp, John Trudell... for speaking to me in a way that helps me keep dragging my ass out the door to try to live a good life . Anyone who finds it in him/herself to survive or cope with her/his own pain and still try to be a positive light in the world!
