Magnificent Nish Woman!!

About Me

Sometimes I start the day with a warm smile on my face, in love with the day and ready to smudge with some good medicines. Sometimes I bounce out of bed with fast dance music playing, bop around getting ready, and race out the door excited to work and accomplish things. Sometimes I wake tired from dreams in which I'm working hard on a spiritual task, and find myself crawling out of bed in a body with arthritis pain, lots of popcorn/salt/butter weight, and a general feeling of anxiety, loss and pain. Sometimes... I wake up singing.Generally I don't wake up hungover, and I don't wake up looking for ways to find heroin or crack or crystal meth. I don't wake up on the sidewalk. I don't wake up hoping to find ways to profit from the destruction of forests or rivers or lakes, or from the suffering of impoverished millions working in unsafe conditions... though it could be argued that just by living a North American urban lifestyle I am both the perpetrator and the victim of these same horrors... Generally I don't wake up in a stranger's bed wondering "what did I just do." uh... generally.I live in a tiny bachelor apartment in downtown Toronto that I can barely afford, and I keep working on ways to either love my life here in TO or build a peaceful and wonderful life somewhere else.I value goofiness over self-righteousness. I would rather be a bit of a fool if it meant I got to have some fun & adventure, than to be entirely appropriate all the time in a way that makes me pompous. But I do value self-awareness and self-love in myself and others! And that can take some real effort. So I appreciate people who invest in their personal growth as well. Just not to the point of being pompous & self-righteous. I guess it's all about perspective & context. Some people could find me both pompous & self-righteous depending on which end of the continuum they inhabit!I'm not the most brilliant woman in the world but I'm not the dopiest, either. I am not always kind, but I really try, and a lot of times I succeed. Some people have told me that I've made a positive difference in their lives, and I don't think I can ask for more than that. But sometimes, I do..!You can also find me at my webpage , or at Hi5 .

I'd like to meet:

Native authors, actors, musicians, performers, thinkers, film-makers, healers (see above, don't get pompous on me!!), artists of many backgrounds, cool people in general who love life and who are pursuing goals with passion & commitment!
I created my own profile using nUCLEArcENTURy.COM and you should too!

Music:

Native traditional & contemporary music, roots in 80's post-punk/industrial/new wave, blues, jazz, and a real appreciation for hiphop/rap though I don't claim to live that experience in any real way. Oh, and "Tenacious D..." I'll put it here instead of in "greatest movies of all time..."

Movies:

Anything by Kevin Smith... I can get into the world of Bruce Campbell a bit with my friends though I don't seek it out on my own... Jane Austen movies, chick-flicks (I have a solid collection of romantic comedies which I do not apologize for!), LOTR... and if only distribution was available I could stock up on the work of Native film-makers, but alas it's kind of a challenge. Romy & Michelle's High School Reunion and Grosse Point Blank, High Fidelity, HUSTLE & FLOW, Vanilla Sky, A Beautiful Mind, Memento, Ray... and anything with Adam Sandler, Jim Carey, Jack Black, Mike Myers or Drew Barrymore in 'em, for those feel-good times. Ahh, Adam Sandler in Spanglish, and Jim Carey in Cable Guy and Mike Myers in Club 54... yes those boyz are good in serious roles. Ultimate in cool: Honey Moccasin, by Shelley Niro!!!!!!!

Television:

The Colbert Report, The Daily Show. Or is it The Daily Show, The Colbert Report? Yeah, I like Grey's Anatomy and ER, yeah, I like The Amazing Race. I love House. Comedy/news, comedy/news, medical, medical, reality and medical.

Books:

Sci-fi/fantasy, mostly fantasy like Marion Zimmer Bradley & Stephen R. Donaldson, tons of film & theatre books...And of course, plays, poetry, fiction & non-fiction by Nish/Native authors.Strong Women Stories (Lawrence/Anderson, eds.) has some of my writing in it, and so does v. 29.2 of the Atlantis Women's Studies Journal, same editors. I strongly recommend that confused (or apologetic -- see my blog) urban Native people read "Real Indians & Others" by Bonita Lawrence... and some self-righteous "real NDNs" could stand to read it too. Poets Chrystos & Joanne Arnott are faves & not just because they're really kind to me! Conquest, by Andrea Smith, A Recognition of Being by Kim Anderson, Without Rezervation ed. by Kateri Damm, and Indigenizing The Academy are also on my "cool/useful" list.

Heroes:

Betty Pamp, John Trudell... for speaking to me in a way that helps me keep dragging my ass out the door to try to live a good life . Anyone who finds it in him/herself to survive or cope with her/his own pain and still try to be a positive light in the world!
