REZ BLUEZ TV wins an Aboriginal Peoples Choice Music Award for ‘Best Television Program Promoting Aboriginal Music’
(North Vancouver, B.C.) The producers of the second season of Rez Bluez TV, Elaine Bomberry, Aaron Goldman and Shawn Henry, are pleased to announce that their television program won an Aboriginal Peoples Music Choice Award (APMCA) for ‘Best Television Program Promoting Aboriginal Music’ on Thursday, November 6th, at Manito Ahbee Festival, held at the McPhillips Street Station Casino in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
Rez Bluez TV is the only show of its kind in the world that showcases Native blues musicians and comedians from all over Turtle Island. We want to say Chi-miigwetch, Nia:weh, Big Thanks to all our fabulous musicians, crazy comedians, wonderful crew, the broadcasters and sponsors and everyone who voted on-line and watched our show on the Aboriginal Peoples Television Network during our second season. Rez Bluez 2 was shot over one week in March 2007, at the Studio Theatre in Hamilton Place, Hamilton, Ontario. Over seven days, ninety-three musicians and comedians were brought in from every corner of Turtle Island to be part of our second season.
We also want to send our Special Thanks to our super talented Native blues musicians and comedians who gave us their best, you are all so amazing and so inspiring!! The Aboriginal Peoples Choice Music Awards were held on November 6th & 7th, 2008, at the Manito Ahbee Festival in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Elaine Bomberry was also one of the co-hosts with Don Kelly for the First Night Awards, the pre-show awards of the APCMA’s, on Thursday, November 6th, and presented ‘Best Blues’ recording on the televised show on Friday, November 7th to J.C. Campbell.
Rez Bluez TV is also nominated for a Canadian Aboriginal Music Award in the same category, which will be held at the Canadian Aboriginal Festival on Friday, November 28th, 2008, in Toronto, Ontario.

REZ BLUEZ SEASON II - SERIES DESCRIPTION The Native heart beat of the blues will ring true one more time on the second season of Rez Bluez. After successful broadcasts on the Aboriginal Peoples Television Network and SUN-TV, Rez Bluez returns to both networks this Fall for a second season on Saturday, March 8, 2008. Still the only show of its kind in the world that features solely Native blues and comedy, Rez Bluez II was shot entirely in high definition…so the blues will fill your living room more than ever! The show will air over the next 13 weeks every Saturday night at 7 pm ET/PT on APTN, so mark this on your calendars!
This season features twenty-six (26) Aboriginal blues acts, for a total of 93 musicians, and 4 comedians, who also do double duty as hosts, and Michaela Washburn returns to host 6 shows. We continue to showcase the best in Aboriginal blues in Rez Bluez II. We have some musicians returning from last season including Derek Miller, The Pappy Johns Band, Harrison Kennedy, Wes Mackey, and Murray Porter to name a few of our returning guest musicians.
We’re also taking great pleasure in introducing some talent new to Rez Bluez TV, including Keith Secola, Jared Sowen, Dalannah Bowen, The Plateros, Martha Redbone, Helen Duguay, Shakti Hayes, Art Napoleon, and Jason Burnstick to name a few of the fabulous musicians who will grace your t.v. screens this coming season.

COMEDIAN BIOS:
MICHAELA WASHBURN
Our host for 6 of the 13 shows is Actor/Comedian Michaela Washburn, who is Metis from Leduc, Alberta. A featured comedian and host from last season of Rez Bluez, Michaela steps up solely as host for 6 shows. She’s an accomplished Actor, having performed in theatre with VideoCabaret, De-Ba-Jeh-Mu-Jig Theatre Group, and with Native Earth Performing Arts in their production of ..Unnatural and Accidental Women’. She is also a Comedian with training through the Second City Program, and studied Pochinko style clown with John Turner of the world-renowned clown duo ..Mump and Smoot’, and was a member of ..Tonto’s Nephews’, an Aboriginal improv comedy troupe. Michaela was also a Therapeutic Clown Practitioner at Toronto’s Hospital for Sick Children.
DREW LACAPA
The gifted comedian Drew Lacapa is from the Apache, Hopi and Tewa Nations in Fort Apache, Arizona, Drew Lacapa has been a favourite in Indian Country state-side for years. He’ll be doing double-duty as both Comedian and Host of a couple of shows. This is his Canadian television debut as a Host of Rez Bluez II. Drew’s also appeared in a fitness video with Elaine Miles (formerly of Northern Exposure) called ..Rez Robics’. Some of Drew’s comedic influences include Minnie Pearl, Red Skelton, Carol Burnett, John Belushi and John Candy. He also has a show that tours throughout the southwest U.S. called Drewfest. SKEENA REECE
The multi-talented Skeena Reece wears many artistic hats, and is an accomplished multi-media artist, singer/songwriter and comedian. She’s performed on the National Aboriginal Achievement Awards doing her own comedy. She’s also worked with many Aboriginal artists including Ostwelve, Kinnie Starr, Daybi, Sandy Scofield and Joy Harjo to name a few accomplished artists she’s worked with. GERRY ..THE BIG BEAR’ BARRETT
Gerry is Ojibway from Saugeen First Nation in Ontario, who is now based in Winnipeg. An honour graduate from the Niagara College of Applied Arts and Technology in radio/televison/film program, Gerry is now the Morning Host on NCI-FM in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He’s appeared on CBC-TV’s ..Welcome to Turtle Island’, and was a featured comedian on last seasons Rez Bluez show. As an actor, he’s appeared in ..Cowboys and Indians’, ..The Killing of J.J. Show Description:
Rez Bluez TV is the first show of its kind anywhere on television that showcases solely Native blues talent and comedy. Native folks have a connection to the blues that comes from an inherent connection to the drum. The drumbeat is the heartbeat of Mother Earth, and this is the same heartbeat that is felt in the blues. Today’s Native blues musicians’ play with such intensity and passion, that you know it comes from a soulful place. Withour fellow African-Canadian blues musicians, and Native musicians from all over Canada, they’re ready to take their blues to the world. This is our own little Motown…the Rez Bluez version. One of our featured musicians, Harrison Kennedy was part of the original Motown sound, back in the day.
Rez Bluez TV features original Aboriginal blues. Some of the talented musicians who are part of the series include: Jani Lauzon, The Pappy Johns Band with Murray Porter, Derek Miller, George Leach, Star Nayea, Harrison Kennedy, The Breeze, Texas Meltdown, The Wolf Pack, Billy Joe Green, and Digging Roots, to name a few of the many talented Native blues musicians who are showcased over the 13 shows.
To offset our blues a bit, we will also feature the hilarious comedic talent of Charlie Hill, Michaela Washburn, Andre Morriseau, Gerry ..The Big Bear’ Barrett, and Moccasin Joe. The Rez Bluez TV journey will be lead by a posse of hosts who live and breathe the blues: Elaine Bomberry, Star Nayea, Diane Keye, Murray Porter, Josh Miller, Jason Martin, Michaela Washburn and Curtis ..Shingoose’ Jonnie.

Native folk & blues rocker Keith Secola is an accomplished artist: award-winning musician, master guitarist and native flute player; singer, songwriter, composer and producer. His music is familiar to thousands of fans across North America and Europe, where he's been playing his brand of progressive music in concerts to a cult following for many years. Keith's famous song, "NDN Kars", is considered the contemporary Native American anthem and is the most requested song on Native radio in the US and Canada. Keith Secola is Anishinabe (Ojibwa) originally from the Mesabi Iron Range country of northern Minnesota, now residing in Arizona. He's a member of the Anishinabe Nation of northern Minnesota and southern Ontario, Canada.
Keith Secola is a seven-time Native American Music Awards winner receiving numerous Nammy nominations in various categories. Winner: Artist of the Year, Best Linguistic Recording, Best Folk/Country Recording, Best Producer, Best Instrumental Recording, Best Blues/Jazz Recording, Best Independent Recording; with nominations for Songwriter of the Year, Record of the Year, Song/Single of the Year, Best Historical Recording.

: "He's a ..red man, singing the black mans' blues, living in a white man's world!’ (from his song Colours). MURRAY PORTER is Mohawk, Turtle clan, born and raised on the Six Nations of the Grand River Territory in southern Ontario, North America. Through his blues he tells the Aboriginal side of history with a mixture of country, blues and humor. He's travelled the world for 30 years spreading his unique style of foot-stomping, hand clapping, “NATIVE BLUES PIANO!!"
He started playing music as a teenager, in bars and nightclubs throughout Ontario and Western New York. Murray performed with THE PAPPY JOHNS BAND for 3 years, and is now concentrating on a solo career in British Columbia. He has been compared to the likes of Dr. John, Joe Cocker and Delbert McClinton. Murray is a self-taught, singer, songwriter and piano player, who's spent the last 30 years playing the blues.
In 1994, he launched a solo career. In 1995, Murray recorded his first solo album "1492, Who Found Who?" for First Nations Music (distributed by EMI), and toured Canada, the U.S., Australia, Egypt, Israel, Germany, and Haiti.
On September 16, 2007, Murray was the opening solo act for blues legends ETTA JAMES & HER ROOTS BAND, and B.B. KING at the Tulalip Amphitheatre in Washington State.
In his own words: “When I was about 11 years old I remember listening to blues radio under the covers at home late at night. This is when I first heard ‘The Thrill is Gone’ by B.B. King, and I was hooked! So to open for the Artist that started me on my blues journey is like a dream come true”.
Murray’s performance received thunderous applause, and he got to meet and talk with both Etta and B.B. In fact, Murray was invited on to B.B.’s bus after the show with his family and friends, and it happened to be B.B.’s 82nd birthday that night. Murray’s photo with B.B. is now one of his prized possessions.
