Thank you for visiting The Virginia Unitarian
Universalist Community Profile.
Have you
been attending a church where you feel like “the big pink elephant in the middle
of the room?â€
Where you
feel like you just don’t fit in as part of the community?
Or worse,
you feel as though you aren’t wanted?
Tired of
feeling you are part of a "Sundays Only Faith", where people are seemingly there
for show?
Tired of
the "get saved or burn in hell" sermons?
Tired of
a church where asking questions is forbidden?
Or have
you not attended a church because you can't find one that would feel comfortable
attending?
Have you
been accused of being a "wolf in sheep's clothing?"
There is an answer. There is a church where
everyone is welcomed and all beliefs are celebrated through genuine love and
sincere community. Where the congregation doesn’t judge you for who you are,
but rather celebrates what makes you different.
The
Unitarian Universalist church has no subscribed creed or dogma. A frequent
quote you may hear is,
“We don’t
have to believe alike to love alike…â€
This is
a large shift from the traditional denominations people have become used to in
our conservative state. As you already know, Virginia is no longer a
“red state†but rather now, a vivid
"purple state†. The Unitarian Universalist Church
has very basic and sincere values: Tolerance, Respect, Love, and Compassion.
These are the basis of our faith; we believe that God is too big to fit into
just one religion and that there is great intrinsic value in all the different
religions and even in no religion at all. We are each on our own path of faith,
and it is up to each of us to nourish our hearts and souls at our own pace and
to our own satisfaction. Where the only challenge you are met with is to find
your own Truth.
I
lovingly call Unitarian Universalism a “religious buffet†because it is like
going to an all you care to eat buffet. You put on your plate as much as you
are comfortable with and sample things you have never tried before if you choose
to. The beauty of this is you can indulge without being judged by anyone else
at the buffet because everyone is there for the same thing, nourishment…
Towards
the goal of an inspirational introduction I would like to introduce you to some

Surprised?
I encourage you to explore the website, the links, and ask questions. We are all curious
creatures and we should be encouraged to seek to understand each other better.
After all we are all human beings together on this planet. We need to
strengthen our community by working together not finding ways to separate us;
from a Christian perspective one might say we should learn to “live as Jesus
lived, and love as Jesus loved…†Or from a Buddhist perspective one might say we
should learn to “live as Buda lived, and love as Buda loved…†There are many
different Prophets that have inspired many different religions, which have all
taught the same basic principles. At the core of each is a universal basis of
love and gratitude, on which we have based our faith.

I'd like to meet:
People looking for a
free
faith.
We are...
a community united in a
common search for religious meaning in our individual lives. Ours is a church
free from dogma and creed, devoted to the use of reason, feeling and compassion
in exploring all areas of religious experience. Ours is a society devoted to
this search and obligated to promote those guarantees which make such a search
possible.
We affirm the worth of all human beings. We trust people's ability to build
their own faith. We seek to encourage people to think for themselves. We
recognize that people will differ in their opinions and lifestyles and feel that
these differences generally should be honored for each person is the final
source of authority for his or her own life.
We exist to offer a warm, open supportive community. We want to provide a place
where individuals can meet and find intellectual stimulation and emotional
support through all the stages and difficulties of life.
We seek to act as a moral force in the world, believing that ethical living is
the supreme witness of religion. We are deeply concerned about the effects of
our current action on future generations. We seek to promote one universal
humanity, undivided by arbitrary classifications or superficial traits, with
allegiance to the cause of a united world community.
By recognizing our human shortcomings, we unite in the hope that in working
together we may come closer to realizing these ideals.
The Seven
Unitarian Universalist Principles
The inherent worth and dignity of every
person;
Justice, equity and compassion in human
relations;
Acceptance of one another and encouragement to
spiritual growth in our congregations;
A free and responsible search for truth and
meaning;
The right of conscience and the use of the
democratic process within our congregations and in society at large;
The goal of world community with peace,
liberty and justice for all;
Respect for the interdependent web of all
existence of which we are a part.
The living tradition which we share draws
from many sources:
Direct experience of that transcending mystery
and wonder, affirmed in all cultures, which moves us to a renewal of the
spirit and an openness to the forces which create and uphold life;
Words and deeds of prophetic women and men
which challenge us to confront powers and structures of evil with justice,
compassion and the transforming power of love;
Wisdom from all the world's religions which
inspires us in our ethical and spiritual life;
Jewish and Christian teachings which call us
to respond to God's love by loving our neighbors as ourselves;
Humanist teachings which counsel us to heed
the guidance of reason and the results of science, and warn us against
idolatries of the mind and spirit;
Spiritual teachings of Earth-centered
traditions which celebrate the sacred circle of life and instruct us to live
in harmony with the rhythms of nature.
