Two years back, the mysterious singer/songwriter, Jim Neversink, arrived in Johannesburg from the East Coast of South Africa. Armed with a collection of 8-track demos, documenting the heartache of his past, Neversink reunited with old studio acquaintance Matthew Fink. Fink, absorbed by the Orbison-like quality of the vocals, immediately began the process of re-recording and shaping the songs. The result of the duos collaboration is the self-titled album, Jim Neversink. With the use of slide guitar and violin, the sound has been described as country-esque. Neversink, however, prefers to call it Loserbilly. With the album completed, a band was needed. Neversink, notable on guitar, banjo and lap steel, was joined by Fink on guitar and accordion. Later, they were joined by Katherine Hunt on bass, violin and backing vocals, and, after much searching, discovered drummer, Warrick Poultney. The live outfit adds a raw edge to the material, delivering a powerful performance to supplement the sadness and cynicism of the lyrics. This makes the live show a welcome addition to the Loserbilly experience that is Jim Neversink.Jim Neversink has been very busy in studio, recording the second album. This time, however, he is joined by the entire live band. The results should, if anything, be interesting. Rumours of a mandolin being added to the list, abound. We wait, in anticipation. For more info contact [email protected]
