I am here for Friends and Networking

About Me

..
So you want to know about me, huh??? well, this journal is for expounding upon linguistics. You won't find out much about me here. If you wish to read my livejournal, you can actually find out more about me there: http://www.livejournal.com/users/rocknghorseland, but do note that you must have a livejournal account and be added as a friend to read a great majority of the things there. I'm also careful about who I add, because it's really personal stuff.
Linguistics student at CU Boulder. Word Nerd. Crazy Bird Lady. Wanna see? play this horribly low-quality video to see "budgie" in action
.. width="425" height="350" ....
I'm unpredictable.... some say a "loose cannon." whatever. If you used to know me back in the day, I was probably not nice to you, and I apologize. Either that, or you may have bet me you'd win at Scrabble and I took your cash. see? I was meant to be a linguist.
I am a know it all about music most people have never heard, and don't want to hear, until it appears in pop culture. Then, those same people think they heard it first. I am a self-avowed music snob. I hang out with college radio geeks. they call themselves officanados. But the rest of the world knows they're geeks. I am an officianado too.
I guarantee you've seen me at Paris. I'm there a lot.
My favorite pastimes are: Reading the dictionary (and I do mean READING it), rollerskating, and going out to coffee at snobby cafes. I like to talk about snobby stuff there. I also like to demonstrate my scrabble braun there. However, my husband doesn't like that, so I try to refrain these days.
You'll like this blog if you like linguistics, words, literature or word games. You'll like this blog if the dictionary is your favorite book. You may like it but disagree with it if you are a grammarian. You will probably dislike it if you hate the soft sciences or converseley, if you think that you're too cool for school. If you are Derek Zoolander, you probably shouldn't add me. You'll just be confused and disappointed. Also, don't bother adding me if you belong to a sorority or a fraternity, unless of course, it's an honor society. I despise the politics of popularity. If you're into that, go away. You won't like it here.
That said...I started writing here expressly for the purpose of expounding upon linguistics. The motivation for this is that my husband rolls his eyes and starts groaning whenever he hears terms come out of my mouth like "glottal stop", "William Labov" or "semantic field". he also groans when I start a sentence like this: " well, you know, Ebonics is a misnomer..." (now insert mental vision of me snorting and pushing up a pair of taped bridge Buddy Holly spectacles, and you have a picture of what he thinks of my studies...) So I had to start this journal as a way of talking to people who appreciate my special brand of 'nerd'.
I add almost anyone, regardless of whether you heeded the admonitions above or not. If you still want to add me after reading that, be my guest. Except webcam girls. Webcam girls are not invited. Neither are webcam boys.

My Interests

Some pics... This is Chris, my husband. Another crap-quality video, but nonetheless...
.. width="425" height="350" .. here's my baby Quaker Parrot, playing with his "bunny ball": .. width="425" height="350" ....
and here's Budgie and Trystan... do they love or hate one another??? (No, they actually do have a loving relationship, but it's a weird one.) object width="425" height="350" ....

I'd like to meet:

I'm afraid of people for the most part. I've recently been brutally stabbed by friendship gone wrong, and I am now extremely cautious. For some reason, I have a dislike for making friends with a great deal of the females I meet. Call this experience.

don't get me wrong... I like meeting new people, I'm friendly and polite in person, and I wish I had more true friends. But be prepared to meet with a cautious human being while coming in contact with me or wishing to establish friendship of any depth.

attention shameless self-aggrandizers:
(how many times will I have to say this before it stops???)if you post band show announcements, advertisements, or any other bothersome promotion on my comments, I will not only delete the coment, I will delete you from my friends and I will post a bulletin to let everyone know how inconsiderate you were to have spammed my message board, right after I ban you from contacting me ever again. I have done this to 1 company and 4 bands (edit: 6 bands and 2 companies... all within 6 months) who thought it would be cool to spam the crap out of my board. This includes "hey, my new album is coming out!", "come to this party" "come buy our crap at a discount" "download my music/videos/etc, etc" or any other mass-mailing stuff that someone thinks is cute to bother people with. If it's a mass mailing, DO NOT post it to my board, or I will delete you. Send me a message if you want my attention. Or an invite to an event. but AGAIN, DO NOT POST IT TO MY MESSAGE BOARD. Get it???

now that I've discovered that people aren't reading this:
I will let you know now that, as of December 29th, 2006, I plan to take even further action against you if you violate this dicatate: I will report your needless spam as abuse. Please don't make me do this to you. If you want attention, post a bulletin.
Just to qualify these statements, do know that I like new music, I'm more than happy to add good bands, and I am not afraid to advocate those bands I love. But do heed the warning, please.

.. width="425" height="350" ....
Nora Keyes is new to me, but has joined "favorites immediately. Her music is so classy, spooky, avant-garde and cool. I am MySpace friends with her profile, so go click on my friends, find her and listen to the music. And fall in love.
*I love Current 93. Soft Black Stars has got to be one of the VERY BEST ALBUMS EVER MADE. And Halo is the best live recording I have ever heard. *And with that... I am really fond of David Tibet and Michael Cashmore. I am utterly intrigued by the talents of Steven Stapleton.
*Nature and Organization
*Weird Al
*Pixies
*Serge Gainsbourg
*Sonic Youth
*Bel Canto

*Deee-Lite (Nicest people! met 'em once at a club.)
*The Cure (you couldn't have guessed that EVER, right?)
*Siouxsie and the Banshees (couldn't have guessed that either, could you???)
*Me and my opera-voice and saw...
Yes, I play the saw. Yes, I am opera-trained.Here is a video of me playing the saw, along with a song called "this side of the blue" by Joanna Newsom.
.. width="425" height="350" .... *Any music my husband Chris makes. But I hate listening to him play the drums. It's frenetic, and it frustrates me. Otherwise, he's brilliant. We have come to an agreement that I can guest sing with the music project he' s about to form. Because Chris also sings, he does not like to share vocals. This could be an issue. Also, the only instrument I play is the saw. I plan to fix that, but he doesn't want to overkill his music with the saw. This is understandable.
The way in which Chris and I got to know each other is because he heard me sing and invited me to join his band, The Orchid Pool. We used to put on great shows. Shad, our bassist, breathed fire. Ric has his whole Keyboard rig thing. Chris and I were freaky-lookin' back then, and dressed in extravagant costumes at shows. We played a show where we bit the petals off of 3 dozen roses and spit them into the crowd. When I was out of roses, I started running the thorns along my tongue until my teeth were bloody-looking. We played a show where no one in the audience moved once. I am still not sure if this was good or bad. Everyone had this gape-mawed look as I twirled with a giant bubble wand and tossed a flour/glitter mix at the crowd, while Shad breathed fire. Chris and I put on a scene while singing a song where I acted like I had choked him to death and kept singing over him. I folded his hands over his chest and kissed his cheek. I layed flowers on him, and as I sang, I tossed glitter all over him and the act concluded by Chris "rising from the dead" and singing the rest of the song. I had so many plans for stage shows, but alas, our engagement, and the time-consumption which planning a wedding entailed, ended our involvement in the band, and the Orchid Pool broke up about 6 months to a year after we left. That was 7 years ago. Maybe we'll work on music together again someday.

*The Smiths
*Morrissey (old stuff)
*Danse Society
*The music (AND movies!) of Carmen Miranda
*Madredeus
*Adorable
*Rozz Williams
*Edith Piaf

Does that give you an idea? Oh, and not that people who don't like Kate Bush are bad, but anybody who likes Kate Bush is automatically in my "cool" book.

Movies:

I have watched a lot of movies in my time, but I only have a few favorites. They include:

*The Royal Tennenbaums * The Life Aquatic *Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter, Spring *Night on Earth *City of the Lost Children (yeah, what a surprise) *The Big Lebowski *Dirty Work *Anger Management *The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill

There are a few movies I hate, Because they are the epitome of bad film. These include:

*The Corndog Man, hands-down, the worst movie EVER *Arizona Dream, a movie Johnny Depp is glad that everyone forgot *American Movie, a close second to Corndog Man

Television:

Lately, am very against having the television on. It keeps me from getting anything done. So I want it off. all of the time. But somehow, I still watch it. What a sucker!

Books:

I read this McBook called "the Five People you meet in heaven". It was actually great. I really like Stendahl, Neil Gaiman, and sometimes, I even like McBooks by Poppy Z Brite. I also enjoy Voltaire, Moliere, and other funny but dead european guys, who really were the haters of their day. Steve Martin should get a pulitzer prize for "Pure Drivel". It's the best book ever. I think it's a McBook though, because I bought it in the grocery store. For shame!

Really, I hate Fiction, to a great extent, and read nothing but poetry, biographies, classics, and reference books (yeah... think "Oxford's English Dictionary. That really is my favorite book). I also like decorating books and self help, at times.

oh, and feel free to ask me about the term "McBook." It's a laugh.I write poetry and I would love it if you read my blog there, too! Username: The Night and Her Train of Stars.

Heroes:

Jesus, St. Claire, my husband, Myself, My grandma, My Aunt Annie, Gavin Friday, Socrates, Moses, Esther, Paul, William Labov, President Reagan, President Bush.
