Call on God, but row away from the rocks. - Hunter S. Thompson

About Me

I am an antiquarian book dealer and struggling writer. I'm not trying to amass thousands of friends but I'm pretty inclusive. Mostly what you're going to find in my friends lists beyond "real" friends are writers, artists, scientists and political and philosophical activists. If it's a music "friend" then you can count on my actually liking that music. So, yes, there is room in my head for Rob Zombie and Billy Bragg and Stan Rogers and Rasputina. My Interests

Mark Twain, Harlan Ellison, writing, most genre fiction, documentaries, riding my bike, obtaining rare books, getting back to the gym, avoiding television and most pop-culture.

I'd like to meet:

Sadly, fewer people every year.

Music:

Fiona Apple, Tom Waits, Dr. John, Bad Brains, Frank Zappa, Beastie Boys, Dandy Warhols, Springsteen, The Clash, Cabaret Voltaire, Billy Childish, Dyan, Beck, Bauhaus, Brahms, Dropkick Murphys, Drive By Truckers, Dick Dale, Doors, Flaming Lips, Hammel On Trial, Iggy Pop, Kid Rock, Led Zeppelin, LEZ Zeppelin, The WHO, early Stones, later Lou Reed, Mila Javovich, Mountaingoats, Nina Hagen, Klaus Nomi, Pere Ubu, Richard Thompson, Dizzie Gillespie, Oscar Peterson, Coltrane, Django, Shonen Knife, Soul Coughing, X, Stiff Little Fingers, Live Bowie, Nick Cave, The Fugs, The Cure, Warren Zevon, XTC, you know ... stuff.

Movies:

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, Fitzcarraldo, Bride of Frankenstein, Loose Change, The Corporation, The Man Who Would Be King, Harold and Maude, Galaxy Quest, White Hunter, Black Heart, Young Frankenstein, V For Vendetta, Cape Fear, Cat People, Lost Horizon, Kill Bill Vol. 1 & 2, The Seven Samurai, The Magnificent Seven, The Harder They Fall, Mountains of the Moon, Unforgiven.

Television:

The Outer Limits, The Wire, Deadwood, The Avengers, The Prisoner, Carnival, Twin Peaks. Having confessed that - Kill your television.

Books:

Mark Twain, Harlan Ellison, Rudyard Kipling, Hunter S. Thompson, Jim Thompson, Hardboiled Fiction, Science Fiction, T.C. Boyle, Robertson Davies, Philip K. Dick, H.P. Lovecraft, Thom Jones, Donald Westlake, J.G. Ballard, James M. Cain, Avram Davidson, Mary Sheeley's FRANKENSTEIN, Carter Beats the Devil, Seven Who Fled, Pop. 1280, Farenheit 451, William S. Burroughs, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, about half of Tom Wolfe and half of Gene Wolf and I really liked WHO'S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF? by Albee but I don't care all that much for Virginia Woolf. Dorothy Parker was a genius and so was James Thurber.

Heroes:

Bill Hicks, Mark Twain, Rosa Parks, Ghandi, Malcolm X, George Carlin, Jello Biafra, Stephen Colbert and dozens of others. But remember kids, Kill Your Heroes.

This week in media divisiveness and horseshit

Well, it's been a REALLY fun news week. First and foremost, I saw about a dozen different media markets asking just how deep the Republican demographic hole was after losing three run-off elections in...
