Nick Mancini is, by his own admission, most at home when behind the vibes and in front of a capacity crowd. He has performed and recorded with such noted musicians in the jazz, pop and classical world as Kenny Werner, Marvin "Smitty" Smith, Charles Fambrough, Bob Hurst, Jennifer Holiday and Leon Fleisher. As a bandleader, Nick has written, produced, and recorded with Silver Standard (Horace of a Different Color) a tribute to the music of Horace Silver, the Nick Mancini Collective (Live: New York) and Type II (Flexible Plan). Greg Burk from the LA Weekly describes Mancini as "...an exploratory young vibraphonist with two toes dipped in tradition who splashes gentle swing, understatedly bent shoogabooga and exotic undersea layerings of filtered light. Original and good." A masters degree recipient of the Manhattan School of Music's prestigious jazz program, his prowess as a musician never obscures his talent as an entertainer.
Nick Mancini Collective uses the inspiration of great jazz composers of the 50's and 60's as a springboard for fresh, incisive and occasionally comedic arrangements. A dynamic fixture of the NYC and LA jazz scenes, Mancini decisively leads his group through tightly-knit sets of burning, straight-ahead jazz flights, moody vamps, evocative ballads and blistering funk. This vibrant menagerie of musical masters delivers a continually evolving stream of musical settings that are all at once spontaneous, reminiscent and unmarked.
Reviews:
"In from New York City is the Nick Mancini Collective, led by an exploratory young vibraphonist with two toes dipped in tradition who splashes gentle swing, understatedly bent shoogabooga and exotic undersea layerings of filtered light. Original and good."
- Greg Burk, LA Weekly
"From New York, vibist Mancini leads his quartet to the Promised Land."
- James E. Fowler, LA Times
"Vibraphone virtuoso Nick Mancini heads a smooth, agile and expert combo. . ."
- LA Weekly (Pick Of The Week)
"(Nick Mancini and Matt Snyder's Type II Flexible Plan) is full of drive and lyricism. . . There is a sense of another era embedded in this music; yet it is not dated. The style is given fresh life in the hands of this band with sparkling improvisations and fine interactivity."
- Cadence Magazine
"Nick Mancini's shimmering, chiming vibes are a constant joy. . ."
- Jerome Wilson, Cadence Magazine
"Nick Mancini's vibraphone solo, at a later section of the already-mentioned A Tear in the Clouds, is unquestionably from someone with a jazz vernacular."
